Software Engineer, Storytelling & Publishing
Job Description
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
About the Role:
The New York Times is looking for a Software Engineer to join the Programming team. You’ll join a cross-functional team of engineers, designers, and product managers to help us build the in-house tooling the newsroom uses to manage the NYTimes.com home page and its equivalent in the New York Times iOS and Android apps. This is an opportunity to contribute to the mission of the Times, and you’ll be part of an engineering organization that values transparency and openness, diversity, learning, community, and continuous improvement.
Our work is unprecedented and challenging. We’re building an entirely new version of our editorial process and the applications that power it, while maintaining all our standards for publishing news. We get to partner with a terrific team of internal newsroom users -- we know their names and they know ours.
About the Programming Team:
When news breaks, readers around the world turn to The New York Times for trustworthy, authoritative coverage. Our team makes sure the newsroom can publish those updates, 24/7. We take pride in high reliability and high usability, so the newsroom’s talented editors can focus on the content of the journalism, not clicking buttons and dealing with error messages.
We’re working hard to make the home page and home screen a better, more useful product. Beyond breaking news, The Times also offers a huge volume of high-quality journalism: exclusive feature-length articles, features coverage, opinion and commentary, audio and video, NYT Cooking, Wirecutter and more. Traditionally, our newsroom has packaged all of this so that everyone loading the home page sees the same coverage at the same time. This sense of a “shared experience” is vital to us because we stand for trustworthy, unbiased news -- an alternative to the echo chambers of social media. We want to preserve everything that’s great about that while evolving the home screen into a better experience. We’re bringing techniques like geo-targeting, A/B testing, and algorithms powered by data science into the newsroom, putting them into the hands of journalists, and using them to help the right articles find the right readers at the right time. That increases the reach of our journalism (and drives engagement for our subscription business too). We aim to amplify our newsroom’s editorial judgment, not replace it.
This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters.
Basic Qualifications:
- 2+ years of full-time software engineering experience building features in large-scale distributed systems
- 2+ years of experience with modern frontend web fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, web performance, accessibility) and best practices
- Familiarity with one or more frontend frameworks (React, Angular, Vue), and familiarity with general patterns and practices related to working with these technologies (Redux, CSS modules, etc)
- Enthusiasm for supporting our newsroom and a willingness to develop an understanding of our product space
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Google Firestore
- Experience collaborating, giving feedback, and iterating on processes with cross-functional partners (product, design, adjacent teams)
- Ability to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and share learnings with others
This role will require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
