Job Description
The role of the Software Engineering Group Manager I helps manage multiple Software Engineering teams, typically consisting of 4-8 reports. This role assists with ownership and progress of product or platform features, as well as management for the Software Engineering group. This role must be able to set clear goals, define metrics, and track progress. This is a full-time position with remote, hybrid and on-site opportunities available.
Responsibilities
- Overseeing and gauging progress and execution of important projects assigned to their team and advises team to improve execution, as needed
- Clarifying ownership and decision making for the development team staff
- Maintaining and improving their team(s) output in terms of velocity and project/product progress
- Providing oversight on the quality and technical accuracy of their team(s) technical output
- Attending team planning meetings to monitors and adjust team pace. Can identify when to instill urgency for success and/or protect from burnout
- Contributing to defining strategic direction, planning the roadmap, escalating issues, and synthesizing feedback to ensure team success
- Discussing implementation questions or problems encountered by development team members
- Reviewing and providing input on design documents as requested
- Contributing to the public facing forums, helping respond to requests in a timely manner
- Resolving interpersonal and technical conflict within and outside the team
- Advising department manager and team with insights and recommendations to improve the team
- Coaching, developing, and career management of their employees: setting performance expectations, career planning, performance reviews, managing low performers, compensation reviews, promotions, and terminations for the engineering group
- Contributing to plans and executing changes to team staffing in service of company goals: identifying gaps, defining roles, and managing team size
- Meets and maintains 6 month performance milestones provided by their manager
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, related field or comparable experience
- 8 years of industry experience
- Minimum 2 years of managerial experience
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Written communication skills – able to document issues effectively and concisely
- Strong programming skills – using Java and Python
- Familiarity with agile methodologies such as SCRUM
- Familiarity with source control management systems such as Github
- Ability to accurately and effectively document ideas and specifications
- Ability to lead and guide teams of 4 or more employees
