MITRE's Software Engineering Innovation Center is seeking a Group Leader within its L534 Department - Software Solutions and Technologies. L534 applies software engineering fundamentals (e.g., systems analysis, requirements engineering, software design and architecture validation, modeling, prototyping, development, and deployment), emerging technologies, research and innovation to produce successful outcomes and solutions for a wide breadth of target environments. The department offers services related to operational development, systems analysis, and cyber engineering, using software and agile best practices, prototyping, and modern software engineering tools and techniques.

The GL will lead a diverse team that focuses on a variety of software-focused disciplines and engage in leadership opportunities for technical innovation and software development, oversight of technical work definition and execution, and opportunities for individual contribution as well. In addition, the GL will focus on staff development, technical expertise, and delivery of high-quality technical products. Hybrid or on - site in Mclean, VA is preferred but not required.

The GL role is resourced at approximately 10% level of effort, the selected candidate will balance this role with contributions to direct or indirect projects, including MITRE Innovation Program and other efforts. The successful candidate will be able to recruit, inspire, coach, and develop the careers of software systems engineers at multiple levels of experience, early career through experienced staff.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Engage with staff to enable development opportunities, define career paths, identify strategic work opportunities and facilitate knowledge sharing across the department
  • Identify, develop, and coordinate project opportunities for the group and the department
  • Assist or lead in recruitment and securing staff for MITRE projects and task orders
  • Be active in department, division, and FFRDC recruitment and hiring activities.
  • Work with department and division leadership to evolve the mission, vision, values, and culture of the group and department
  • Engage with Work Leads for feedback on staff to effectively assess performance and support professional development and career growth
  • Work one or more software-related direct or indirect projects for approximately 90% level of effort, ideally in technical or task leadership roles

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience. 2 years of leadership experience
  • Strong software development expertise
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Desire to contribute to department, division, and MITRE Labs strategy and objectives
  • Ability to get and maintain at least a Secret clearance and other forms of government access (DHS fitness, IRS MBI, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous management, mentorship, or leadership experience
  • Experience growing and/or mentoring less experienced software developers
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with MITRE colleagues
  • Broad knowledge of the department's work
  • Ability to make connections across other departments and across the corporation
  • Experience connecting staff interests and work with department and division strategy
  • Experience in building and/or shaping work programs
