JOB SUMMARY:

The Satcom Direct Software Engineering Manager is a leader who guides, coaches, and mentors' teams in the design, development, delivery, and maintenance of software solutions that service the aviation industry.

This role is primarily focused on the leadership and development of people and practices and enables self-directed teams to successfully execute against their goals within an Agile organization in support of corporate vision and strategy

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and should demonstrate the following competencies to consistently perform the essential functions of this position. All employees are expected to adhere to and be knowledgeable of Satcom Direct (SD) operations standards, established security/safety rules and requirements for attendance.

The requirements listed below are representative of the fundamental knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform the job successfully:

  • Manage 2-4 teams of ~3-9 engineers each, with focus on agile team development and growth
  • Work with product owners and business representatives to provide business solutions from inception to deployment
  • Ensure that the whole team owns the quality of the products we produce and maintain a balanced mindset across the engineering disciplines involved in delivering those products according to the 'definition of done'
  • Stay abreast of industry/technology trends relevant to the Software Engineering discipline
  • Regularly review team performance, collaborate with them on team improvement efforts, and understand the data, teams, and workflows.
  • Attract, recruit, retain, and develop top engineering talent
  • Review the performance of individual team members and provide effective coaching for improvement
  • Cultivate and groom leaders
  • Lead teams so they are enabled to maximize the value they can deliver to the business
  • Willingness to code review and manually QA team member's work

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science or related technical field
  • 10+ years' experience in software development
  • 3+ years' experience as a senior leader or manager in an agile software development environment
  • Experience with web application development and the Microsoft technology stack like C# .NET, AngularJS and/or Angular, HTML5 / CSS3, ASP.NET MVC 4+, WCF /Web API, AJAX, JSON, JavaScript, jQuery, Visual Studio, SQL Server, LINQ, SQL, Unit testing, TFS or Git
  • Strong understanding of the Scrum Framework and the responsibility and best practices of each role
  • Proven track record in fostering, grooming, and growing self-governed teams
  • Proven track record in attracting new talent and retaining key talent
  • Significant experience in conflict resolution and coaching
  • Ability to quickly understand and assess technical aspects of our products
  • Ability to advise on best practices (architecture, implementation, team dynamics, etc.)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing general office duties for this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and/or walk around (including the use of stairs). Other demands include the ability to openly communicate with others by talking, listening and reading, able to lift light objects (

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The office environment is generally quiet and, in a temperature, controlled setting with random adjustments in noise or temperature due to others talking or laughing loudly, unscheduled maintenance repairs to the building or its interior offices or unpredictable situations due to weather or other acts beyond company control. An employee must be willing to work their regularly assigned work schedule for their particular duties and/or job responsibilities and in times of need, be able to work an extended schedule depending on company/department needs, project requirements or customer demands. Some overnight travel is required to facilitate work objectives. While at client site locations, if applicable, employee will be required to adhere to the proper safety precautions established by the client while in proximity to their work area, flight-line or maintenance repair center; work may require some physical effort in the handling of light materials, boxes or equipment. The temperature at client locations can vary from controlled to variations off hot/cold when working, standing or walking in or near the flight-line or maintenance repair center.
