Software Integration Intern

Job Summary

Kairos Power is looking for a highly motivated software engineer intern to work within a small software development team that supports the needs of our design, research, and development organizations. In this role you will support engineering teams in the development of code and compute infrastructure related to the design and analysis of nuclear power systems. This includes developing code for a variety of software projects, deploying CI/CD pipelines, and building out cloud-based compute infrastructure. You will play a crucial role in optimizing our code development processes, ensuring smooth and consistent code integration, and deploying code into production. The position requires a strong self-starting mentality and the ability to develop and deploy novel solutions in support of the company mission.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with nuclear and other non-software engineers to define and develop software projects based on their needs.
• Develop, test, and maintain code that meets best practices in terms of readability, scalability, and performance.
• Assist in the development and enhancement of CI/CD processes to support efficient code development and deployment.
• Contribute to the documentation of code, ensuring clarity for current and future team members.
• Review existing code and recommend optimizations or refactoring where necessary.
•  Assist in developing software standards which other teams will use to develop and deploy code.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a BS, MS, or PhD program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Strong proficiency in interpretive languages such as Python.
• Proficiency in compiled languages such as C++ is desired.
• Familiarity with common software concepts such object-oriented programming, polymorphism, data structures, and algorithms.
• Familiarity with scientific computing is desired.
• Familiarity with modern coding best practices, including but not limited to:
  • Version Control: Experience with tools such as Git.
  • Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD): Hands-on experience with platforms like Jenkins, Travis CI, or GitHub Actions.
  • Automated Testing: Experience in writing unit tests and utilizing frameworks like PyTest or GoogleTest.
  • Code Documentation: Familiar with tools such as Doxygen or Sphinx.
  • Containerization: Exposure to Docker or other container tools.
  • Cloud Platforms: Experience with AWS or other cloud-based platforms.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.

The salary range for this position is $28-32 per hour for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California.
