L533 - Software Engineering & Computing (SWEC) Department provides full lifecycle software engineering services that offer technically sound solutions to respond to the government's changing mission needs and diversity of solutions to evolve with changes in situation, condition, and circumstance. The successful candidate will work with the current L533 Department Manager (DM) and help lead the evolution of this large department of diverse people, skills, and technologies.

Key Functions:

Grow our team

  • Serve as the direct supervisor for staff performance and development for a group of six to eight individual contributors.
  • Advise group members to develop goals that are measurable and have impact for MITRE and the sponsors.
  • Assist group members with finding projects and work that are aligned with skills, interests, and career development goals.
  • Communicate with work leaders throughout the year to discuss employee performance.
  • Provide input to DM for annual assessment and salary adjustments.
  • Manage challenging employee(s) interpersonal dynamics, behavioral issues, and performance concerns if they arise.
  • Recognize and celebrate outstanding contributions of group members.

Shape and communicate strategy and operations

  • Translate and communicate MITRE's mission and strategy, making it meaningful to group members.
  • Participate in shaping the department/group strategy and in communicating strategic plans so that they are tangible and meaningful to employees.
  • Forecast workforce skillset demand that support department hiring activities.
  • Participate in department, division, and FFRDC recruitment and hiring activities.
  • Support employees in understanding MITRE internal communications and in navigating Policies and Procedures, HR processes, and administrative procedures (e.g., timecards, absences, transfers, retirement, potential legal issues).

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or similar field and 5 years of experience.
  • Understands and can communicate MITRE's missions, domains, and challenges.
  • Can define projects or programs greater than an individual contributor.
  • Demonstrated leadership presence as a trusted colleague and compelling communicator.
  • Strong and effective inter-personal and communication (verbal and written) skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS in Computer Science or computing related field with 8 or more years of experience as a software engineer including at least two years of leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to shape work for staff and with diverse group of clients.
  • Demonstrated success in practicing software engineering methods.
  • Knowledge of MITRE people management systems and processes
  • Proven ability to work across the software engineering lifecycle including requirements, architecture, design, implementation, testing, and deployment, while taking on ever-increasing areas of responsibility
  • Knowledge of software engineering lifecycle; Agile, DevSecOps and Cloud frameworks and implementation; software architecture; software process improvement; software languages and development methodologies and tools
