4M Research is seeking an experienced Software Systems Engineering Lead to join our team in Huntsville, AL. to lead a team working on the Mars Ascent Vehicle program. Your primary responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Translation of mission goals to spacecraft and operational system software requirements to subsystem requirements, mapping requirements to component and subsystem verification, and system level validation
  • Decompose requirements into design elements, balancing technology and available capabilities
  • Map component FMEA to detection and response behaviors detailed in FPDD
  • Map FPDD behaviors to hardware and software requirements with traceability across all spacecraft system requirements
  • Engineer, define, and document spacecraft commands and parameters consistent with design reference mission (DRM) to accomplish mission goals, and flow down into software requirement specifications
  • Engineer, define, and document spacecraft telemetry for spacecraft bus and payload instruments consistent with design reference mission (DRM) to accomplish mission goals and flow down telemetry processing behaviors into software requirement specifications
  • Engineering responsibilities include data flow, storage, throughput / rates, processing loads, drain / fill analysis, integrity, completeness, and data tracking with corresponding spacecraft requirements derivation and behaviors (commands, telemetry and parameters)
  • Develop and maintain spacecraft bus flight software interface documents (HW - SW ICD, SW - SW ICD, etc.)
  • Develop, document and communicate software system integration plan, processes, and completion measurement to perform integration of hardware - software building blocks with systematic checking of each interface and every behavior path to build the system
  • Support software system verification and validation (V&V) to ensure complete and consistent

Basic Qualification Requirements:

  • BS STEM plus 9 years' experience OR an MS plus 7 years' experience OR a Ph.D. plus 5 years' experience
  • Six years of experience performing spacecraft software engineering development and operations tasks on an autonomous planetary exploration spacecraft program
  • Experience developing software requirement specifications/documents
  • Experience developing software interface control documents
  • Experience developing mission critical spacecraft software components
  • Experience supporting spacecraft flight Software Item Qualification Test (SIQT)
  • Experience with product development command media, LM and NASA NPR

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work well with wide variety of software developers, subsystem engineers, mission operations engineers, and customer stakeholders
  • Understanding of software plans, processes, practices, standards, and implementation languages to support development and qualification of mission critical spacecraft software systems, across all software domains (flight, testbed simulation, EGSE, ATLO, and ground data system)
  • Experience performing spacecraft mission operations
  • Experience with software task estimation methods
  • Experience with configuration management tools and engineering change management processes
  • Experience developing and maintaining engineering Technical Performance Metrics (TPMs)
  • Experience with engineering anomaly identification and resolution tools and processes.
