Sports Editor

Summary:
The Sports Editor is responsible for the sports content in the Michigan Group's digital and print publications, and collaborating with local and group staff to achieve strategic long-term and tactical day-to-day digital traffic and print readership growth. The Editor will directly supervise the statewide sports coordinators from the Macomb Daily, The Oakland Press, Morning Sun, Royal Oak Tribune, News-Herald/Press & Guide, and Voice publications. The Sports Editor is responsible for the speed , accuracy and quality of our local sports report, and for creating a multimedia-rich web experience. Schedule is generally Monday - Friday, but days and hours will vary with staff/group/production needs.
What you will do:

• Oversees the day-to-day work of the local sports coordinators and their teams
• Leads by example and owns a vision for audience-focused, digitally-savvy publications
• Sets clear goals and expectations to hold staff - even those not direct reports - accountable for activities and results
• Understands the tradition of solid, tough journalism and translate this to print sports sections and digital publications across Michigan
• Drives significant institutional and cultural change
• Works on developing others to achieve their best performances as a mentor and teacher
• Someone who uses 'we' not 'I' and inspires people while building a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration
• Treats users as partners and engage them in the group's sports content creation efforts
• Identifies risks that should be taken and changes to be made, and prioritize them by weighing short-term and long-term needs, risks and rewards
• Utilizes best practices for readership, Search Engine Optimization and Social Media to drive performance

What you will bring:

• Several years sports writing, editing, production and digital experience
• Strong leadership skills
• Excellent journalism, analytical and problem-solving skills are required
• Exceptional writing and editing skills are required
• Experience working with WordPress, HTML, Photoshop and video a plus
• Experience experimenting with new digital tools and metrics
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks at once
• Experience working collaboratively across news and business departments to develop plans to achieve goals
• Understands the importance of content, curation, aggregation, multimedia and audience engagement to the success of digital and print publications
• A sports pedigree with deep experience creating content

The Oakland Press, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is a daily newspaper published in Oakland County, Michigan with headquarters in Troy. It is owned by 21st Century Media, the local historical society traces its origins to The Pontiac Gazette, founded in 1843. The paper has been published under various names, including The Pontiac Press, until it was renamed The Oakland Press in 1972. Original editorials and reporting, including major-sport beat writers, are also carried in the sister paper The Macomb Daily.
