Hearst Technology Services, Inc. (HTS) has an opportunity for a Sr. Cloud-focused FinOps Manager with experience analyzing costs and resource consumption of applications hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google (GCP) cloud IaaS and PaaS platforms. Hearst embraces this opportunity to redefine our technology architecture by utilizing the most modern, cloud-native approaches based around AWS, Azure, and GCP services for our customers. This position reports to the Director of Hearst's Cloud Center of Excellence.

The Data Scientist will lead the efforts of a team responsible for providing monthly cost analysis and future optimization opportunities for a collection of nearly 400 wholly-owned subsidiaries. The data scientist will own both the cost and usage data lake as well as the front-end cost management toolset, as well as the analysis of the data, and the presentation of insights to participating businesses on a regular cadence.

We are looking for candidates who are highly analytical and detail-oriented, with a passion for math and statistics. Public cloud platform domain knowledge is a must. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential, along with a passion for research and discovery. Experience with high-trust, self-organizing, multi-disciplinary teams and the workflows that support them is important.

Job Responsibilities
  • Monthly collection, preprocessing, and analysis of all cost and usage data for Hearst companies across all cloud providers: AWS, Azure, and GCP
  • Lead monthly business reviews with Hearst-owned companies to ensure teams fully understand their cloud spend and options for optimization
  • Design, publish, and optimize monthly cost usage reports and dashboards for various audiences (technical, financial, and executive) to consume throughout Hearst
  • Creation, enhancement, and ongoing ownership of Hearst's cloud cost and resource usage data lake
  • Configuration, enhancement, and ongoing ownership of Hearst's cloud cost management software platform
  • Development of models to address future business challenges and provide ad-hoc cost analysis where necessary
  • In alignment with Hearst's Cloud Center of Excellence governance mechanisms, provide advice and recommendations from a cost perspective to assist businesses' overall cloud service choices
  • Alignment with and support of Hearst cloud migration efforts through the creation of business cases and cloud cost estimates
  • Champion a culture of continuous process, cost, and service artifact optimization via agile practices
  • Ensure laser-focus on automation and process optimization to divest of manual toil wherever possible
  • Identify valuable new data sources and automate the collection process
  • Analyze large amounts of information to discover trends and patterns
  • Build predictive models and machine-learning algorithms
  • Present information using data visualization techniques
  • Collaborate with engineering and product development teams
  • Ensure strong working relationships with other areas of the business contributing to the delivery of service to customers, notably DevOps, Architecture, product management, development, and support
  • Ensure support for a culture of continuous improvement, including identifying areas for potentially improved automation and feeding back to relevant teams
  • Management reporting and other duties as necessary
Experience Required
  • Five or more years as a data scientist or analyst
  • Five or more years of experience in IT infrastructure, public cloud services architecture, systems engineering, or design and deployment of software solutions into the cloud.
  • Experience working in large organizations on enterprise-scale projects
  • Experience with data mining techniques and methods
  • Strong knowledge of public cloud services and cost concerns for the three major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, and GCP), with certification preferred
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills, with an ability to communicate in non-technical terms to non-technical people
Essential and Desirable Skills
  • Ability to read and write scripts in one or more modern scripting or programming languages: R, SQL, Python, Scala, Java, C++
  • Thorough understanding of Microsoft Excel
  • Good experience with business intelligence tools such as PowerBI or Tableau and data frameworks such as RedShift, Hadoop, Spark, Hive, Storm, or Flink
  • Strong statistics and algebra math skills
  • Problem-solving mindset
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
Educational Requirements
  • BS/BA degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or relevant industry experience
  • Cloud Certifications nice to have
