This role provides a high-impact opportunity to design, maintain, and optimize critical database systems that support large-scale, mission-driven operations. The Sr Database Engineer ensures high availability, disaster recovery, and performance optimization across both cloud and on-premises environments. You will leverage automation, Infrastructure-as-Code, and advanced monitoring tools to enhance system reliability while collaborating closely with delivery teams, architects, and product owners. This role also involves mentoring junior engineers and influencing technology roadmaps. Accountabilities:
Design, implement, and maintain highly available and secure database environments across cloud (Azure) and on-prem platforms.Develop automation and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) workflows using SQL, PowerShell, and other scripting tools to streamline operations.Optimize database performance through proactive monitoring and tuning with SQL Server Profiler, Extended Events, and Query Store.Build and enhance CI/CD pipelines for database artifacts to enable smooth deployments and continuous improvement.Act as a technical advisor for delivery teams, providing escalated support and resolving complex database issues.Mentor junior engineers through coaching, code reviews, and sharing best practices to elevate technical standards.Collaborate with architects and product owners to shape technology roadmaps, identify improvements, and drive innovation.Prepare technical documentation and present database concepts to broader engineering teams to foster knowledge sharing.Participate in on-call rotations to ensure high system availability and rapid issue resolution.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in a technical or business discipline, or equivalent experience.Minimum 5 years of database engineering experience, including 2+ years implementing CI/CD pipelines and IaC practices.Expert-level experience with Microsoft SQL Server (2019+) including installation, configuration, performance tuning, high availability (Always On, clustering), and disaster recovery.Proficiency in T-SQL development, including complex queries, stored procedures, triggers, and query optimization.Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, especially Microsoft Azure (SQL Database, SQL MI, Cosmos DB, Azure Data Factory).Experience with database automation and scripting using PowerShell or similar tools.Familiarity with RDBMS constructs, OS authentication, data protection techniques (encryption, obfuscation), and source control standards (Git Flow or Trunk-Based Development).Experience with large datasets, data warehousing, ETL processes, and analytics tools such as Snowflake.Strong troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and ability to mentor and collaborate with cross-functional teams.Preferred: experience with Oracle databases, Microsoft Azure Database Administrator certification, and networking fundamentals.
