Position Summary
We are seeking a Senior Development Engineer to help develop and sustain our next generation of clinical diagnostic platform and tests. This position works with external and internal partners in Operations, Software Development, Assay Development, Assay Workflow Automation, and Field Service.

As a member of our Product Development Team, you will be at the forefront of taking Illumina's impressive battery of technology and applying it to better the outcomes of patients everywhere in the world. The technology is amazing, but at the end of the day, it's the outcome to patient that matters. You will leverage the power of our next generation sequencing technologies, and guide development of the next generation of products.
In this technical role, you will maintain the design of our sample preparation instruments sub-system(s), being responsible for the architecture, design, and appropriate design changes. You will travel to internal Illumina sites and external vendors to collaborate on the design and maintenance of the system, and to resolve and execute projects as needed. You are willing to travel to United States and European sites internally and externally.
Responsibilities
As a member of our development group, you will become an expert in Illumina sample preparation instrumentation, providing support for both internal and external customers. To accomplish this, you will take on the following responsibilities:
- Become an internal expert in the design of Illumina sample preparation instruments. Own architecture, design, and maintenance of sub-system(s).
- Plan design features/improvements, design changes, and resolution of instrumentation issues.
- Execute system design changes, resolve system issues, and manage suppliers for custom parts and instrumentation.
- Contribute to organizational approval to change proposals.
- Drive hardware/software integration testing, performance characterization, requirement analysis, test design, defect and customer complaint root cause investigations, and risk and hazard analysis.
- Lead technical discussions with suppliers and collaborators. Establish technical bonds with external teams.
- Identify and define key projects and proposals for the maintenance and improvement of the system.
- Estimate technical project budget. Construct project timelines and present status updates.
- Establish key cross-functional communication with a variety of scientific collaborators to ensure product development success.
- Mentor Junior Engineers in technical areas of expertise, provide performance feedback.
Required Qualifications
- BS in Engineering (Biomedical, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical) or a BS in a science/technology field and equivalent experience
- 5+ years of experience in product development, medical device, test engineering, field service, or relevant industry experience
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills, experience with statistical analysis techniques and packages
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
- Comfortable asking questions, raising concerns, and engaging in technical dialog in new and uncharted fields
Desired Qualifications
- Clinical development and/or manufacturing background is highly desirable (ISO 13485, ISO9001, GXP)
- Previous experience with Liquid Handlers and associated control software (E.G. Hamilton Venus, Tecan EVOWare, etc) is highly desirable.
- Knowledge and application of fundamental engineering concepts around Linear Motion, Robotics, Controls
- Previous Experience with understanding C#, Python
- Experience with Biological Assays, comfortable working in a BSL-2 Environment
- Experience with NGS Sample Preparation Methods, and NGS Sequencing
- Fluent with 3D modeling CAD packages, such as Solidworks, Autocad, or equivalent

The estimated base salary range for the Sr Engineer - Development role based in the United States of America is: $86,500 - $129,700. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
