Senior Global Privacy Counsel

What you will do:
Under broad direction from the Vice President and Chief Privacy Officer, the person will serve as trusted counsel to product and functional teams to ensure that products, services, and business applications comply with global privacy regulations and the Global Privacy Program. The person will provide oversight and expertise on a full range of domestic and international data protection and privacy regulations, compliance operations, training, and privacy incidents. They will provide legal guidance related to privacy by driving JCI's privacy global framework. They will lead in creating, reporting, and monitoring privacy controls, safeguards, and risk assessment frameworks to operationalize JCI's Global Privacy program. The position will entail working with cross-functional partners and governance bodies and enforcing privacy requirements. The candidate will work cross-functionally with leaders to explain/support the implementation of legal and policy requirements to enable the business to position privacy as a competitive advantage driving business growth and customer loyalty.

How you will do it:
  • Serve as one of a team of Global Privacy Office Counsel for implementation of global privacy requirements and best practices
  • Support the existing Global Privacy Program, including responsibility for the development, implementation, and periodic review of privacy-related principles, policies, and procedures
  • Guide the business on complex privacy and data issues as well as how privacy interacts and impacts emerging technologies (especially artificial intelligence (A.I.) and facial recognition) and develop creative solutions while ensuring compliance with privacy laws such as the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Brazil's Lei Geral de ProteΓ§Γ£o de Dados (LGPD), Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), China's PDPL, North American privacy laws, such as HIPAA, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requirements and guidelines, the California Consumer Protection Act ("CCPA"), the Canadian - Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), and others.
  • Development and facilitation of privacy training and education programs covering global privacy practices.
  • Provide direction on the implementation of administrative, technical, and physical procedures to protect the privacy of personal data.
  • Collaborate with product and business teams at all stages of product development to identify any potential privacy risk and provide counseling on risk-mitigation
  • Analyze policies and initiatives to provide practical privacy risk mitigation strategies for products across multiple jurisdictions
  • Monitor and respond to developments in data protection and privacy (i.e., new laws, regulations, essential judgments, regulatory guidance, etc.)
  • Provide policy, legal, product, engineering, and other business teams with legal advice on global data protection laws and regulations, including for external communication (including liaising with privacy regulators), policy development, and enforcement decisions

They must have demonstrated capability for innovative thinking, challenging the status quo, and leading organizational changes. They must have the credibility to function as a trusted advisor to the business leaders they support.
  • For this position, the qualified candidate will have demonstrated subject matter expertise in data protection and privacy in a multi-national environment.
  • The candidate must be CIPP certified
  • Candidate must have a J.D. (or foreign equivalent) with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience with at least 6 years of in-house and/or law firm expertise, ideally supporting: complex data privacy matters within b2b and/or b2c environments.
  • The successful candidate must be a disciplined legal drafter/writer and possess a problem-solving, "can do" orientation with a demonstrated ability to simplify complex situations.
  • Experience selecting and managing outside counsel is a plus.
  • U.S. candidates must be fully licensed to practice law and member of at least one U.S. state bar
  • The ability to influence without authority and work within a matrixed legal team are key attributes.
  • Ability to develop and sustain relationships with management at all levels across geographies and customer management skills are required.
