Job Description Summary:
PayPal is seeking a high caliber, experienced, and energetic privacy attorney to join PayPal’s Global Privacy legal team. The Legal Counsel - Privacy position will provide world-class privacy and data protection legal advice as a member of the Global Legal Privacy team, reporting to PayPal’s Global Legal Head – Privacy. The Legal Counsel will work closely with legal colleagues who support PayPal in more than 200 markets around the world as part of a growing legal team, currently comprised of over 175 legal staff members globally. Responsibilities:
Support the business (product, engineering, etc.) to build trustworthy, privacy-first products and services.
Advise on the management and use of data, including privacy matters related to AdTech, Marketing, Advertising, and data governance.
Conduct privacy reviews of new and innovative consumer facing products and services.
Provide subject matter expert advice in connection with regulatory investigations, individual complaints and enquiries received related to GDPR, the management of GDPR individual data subject access rights requests and data retention.
Provide subject matter expert advice across all aspects of global privacy law and regulation, including on highly regulated, sensitive data such as payments data.
Structure, draft, review, and negotiate data protection terms in a variety of commercial agreements including master service agreements, DPAs, and data security agreements.
Skills & Experience: Â Candidates for this position should be able to demonstrate experience and competence with the following.
Significant experience in advising clients on privacy matters and legislation, AdTech/Marketing, and global privacy laws & regulations (including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, GLBA, and other international data protection frameworks).
Significant experience drafting and negotiating data protection terms in commercial contracts.
Familiarity with, and strong interest in, financial services technology, mobile and alternative payments, as well as emerging technology.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and to tolerate change and ambiguity.Â
Global thinker and demonstrated collaborator, who displays sound and pragmatic legal and business judgment in providing practical advice to clients on privacy and data protection issues.
Ability to translate legal advice into actionable policies, processes and programs that enable business objectives.
Qualifications:Â In addition to the above Skills & Experience, candidates should possess the following qualifications.
7+ years of experience practicing either in-house (or in an equivalent setting) or at a reputable law firm.
Juris Doctorate or equivalent degree. Admitted to a state bar.
Exceptional writing skills, with attention to detail and ability to generate creative original drafted documents.
Excellent communication and presentation skills; ability to help non-experts understand applicable regulations and requirements.
Experience advising clients in the financial services, legal compliance, mobile payments, internet, and technology industries preferred.
Relevant certifications, such as a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) or other relevant certifications preferred.
