Overview

The Senior Psychiatric Associate is responsible for the delivery of patient care, and promotion of a therapeutic environment as delegated by and under the supervision of the RN so that the goals and objectives of treatment are achieved on each unit as assigned. This includes but is not limited to the care of the unique behavioral needs within both acute medical and acute behavioral units.

Responsibilities Job Description

  • Maintains safety on the unit.
    • Maintains and carries out checks detailed on the accountability sheets and restricted access items sheets.
    • Conducts rooms searches.
    • Exhibits appropriate use of the de-escalation skills.
    • Responds and participates in behavioral code situations.
    • Owns the milieu by observing patients in the environment at all times.
  • Participates in unit specific routines and group/individual programming.
  • Possesses knowledge of documentation method and charts in a concise manner.
  • Responds and participates in CPR situations.
  • Provides basic patient care by assisting in routing duties that are adapted in the context of behavioral requirements of the patient to provide a safe environment.
    • Personal grooming, bathing, toileting, feeding
    • Oral hygiene
    • Specimen collection
    • Position/ambulating
    • Changing linens
    • Blood Glucose testing
  • Assists nurse in supervising patient condition behaviorally and medically.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of signs/symptoms of behavioral and medical diagnoses and usual interventions.
    • Delivers individual care to the patient and family.
    • Supervises the environment of care being provided to patient taking into context behavioral needs of patient.
    • Accurately takes and records weights, input/output, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rates, respiration rates, oxygen saturation.
    • Monitors and intervenes as vital to changing behavioral indicators.
    • Places patient on/off monitors or equipment as appropriate for ambulation, medical care or for safety.
    • Cleans, sets up, and maintains room and equipment including ordering supplies.
    • Reports unusual findings promptly to the RN and works closely with RN to develop evolving plan of care with respect to current behavioral symptoms.
  • Identifies problems as they occur and takes appropriate steps to resolve them.
    • Monitors and maintains therapeutic milieu.
    • Exhibits appropriate use of de-escalation skills.
    • Participates in active involvement, observation and intervention.
    • Assists in emergent behavioral situations involving assigned patients.
  • Participates in the treatment team's mission, goals and plans.
    • Acts as a member of the multi-disciplinary therapeutic team.
    • Exhibits verbal communication in a timely, detailed, and professional manner.
  • Possesses knowledge of current issues, changes and updates in Nursing Services policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect development level and cultural differences of population served.

Qualifications• Bachelor's Degree• 1 year experience as Psych Associate• Basic Life Support Certificate• 3-5 years of experience caring for patient with primary mental health and/or substance use disorder in an acute care setting (inpatient, ED, etc.)

Preferred• De-escalation/Non-escalation Training• Workplace Conflict Management Training• BERT Training• Emergency Department• Mental Health and/or Chemical Dependence Units
