The Market Intelligence and Fundamentals team is responsible for developing the company's view via comprehensive analysis of North American energy markets. Our fundamental forecasts and longterm views will support tens of billions of dollars of investment decisions in new renewable projects (wind, solar, battery, etc.), and active management of current portfolio of assets. We are a data driven team that provides commercial insights to the company. We are looking for someone who is a quick learner, critical thinker, and problem solver.

AES is seeking a fundamentals analyst to forecast U.S. power markets out to 25+ years on an hourly basis using a production cost model.

The responsibilities of the position include input data management, backcasting historical market results using historical input data, analyzing and judging model results, preparing and presenting results to multiple audience types, and documentation of process (inputs, models, results, etc.).

Job description

• Clean, manage, and document input data from multiple sources for multiple regions• Operating a commercial zonal commitment and dispatch production cost model• Backcasting historical market results using historical input data (debugging and analyzing model outputs to refine and correct inputs until model sufficiently approximates history)• Analyzing and judging model results to assist the team in refining modeling approaches for various policy tests and other assumptions• Preparing and presenting assumptions, process, and results for multiple audience types• Documenting, automating, and hardening data processes• Monitor relevant industry news and market rules changes• Evolve into a U.S. power market subject matter expert

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Math/Physics/Statistics/Economics or another quantitative/analytical field• Is now or greatly motivated to become and electricity market analysis subject matter expert• Proficiency with large data sets (such as SQL or other database skills) • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills• Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and spoken• Able to forge effective working relationships across multiple teams (trading, origination, engineering, etc.)• Able to manage multiple priorities efficiently and dynamically• Self-motivated and comfortable or skilled at independent study/learning• Willing to live or relocate to Houston, TX

Nice to Have

• Existing U.S. power (and/or natural gas) market expertise• Advanced degree or certification in quantitative/analytical field• Experience in computer programming (VBA, python, C, etc.)• Demonstrated understanding of and experience in using fundamental production cost models (i.e. AURORA, PLEXOS, Promod or similar
