Sr. Automation Engineer

The Manufacturing Engineering team at Lunar Energy is responsible for developing the processes and equipment to manufacture our products at scale.  Working closely with internal design teams, external equipment vendors, and manufacturing partners, the members of this team are part engineer and part project manager to ensure the right solutions land on time, and meet our requirements for capacity, quality and cost. We are looking for an experienced, motivated, and highly collaborative Sr. Automation Engineer to grow this important discipline at Lunar Energy.

The Sr. Automation Engineer will develop our automation standards, implement them with integration partners, and drive their own automation projects on the shop floor while supporting Production. This person will work with internal product design and operations teams as well as external equipment vendors, integrators, and contract manufacturers.

On a given day at Lunar, you’ll likely…

  • Execute Lunar’s strategy around manufacturing capital equipment technologies, complexity and scale
  • Develop Lunar’s standards for automation, ranging from component lists, preferred communication protocols, and PLC program templates
  • Manage the work of equipment integrators to ensure they comply with our standards, participate in buyoff events (FAT/SAT) 
  • Work alongside the Manufacturing Test team to ensure their test systems comply with the automation architecture of the line
  • Gain knowledge of our MES/SCADA systems and improve how they integrate into the production line automation
  • Implement your own automation projects from start to finish, including designing, sourcing, commissioning and validating the systems on the shop floor
  • Debug equipment faults and other issues that occur during ramp of the production lines
  • Make changes to robot and PLC programs as needed
  • Travel required, estimated at 40% average with heavier demands during equipment buy-off and production ramp.

Desired Skills:

  • 4+ years in a manufacturing environment developing/improving processes, specifying equipment, and overseeing equipment rollout and buyoff
  • Strong experience across a variety of industrial automation OEMs- robot/PLC programming is a must. Experience with Fanuc, UR, Yaskawa robots and Rockwell, Beckhoff and Omron PLCs are a plus.
  • 3D CAD ability is a plus (ex. Catia, Solidworks, NX, Onshape etc.)
  • Hands on experience installing, wiring and modifying mechanical/electrical systems
  • Comfortable integrating and using MES/SCADA systems
  • Strong project management experience and an eye for detail and organization
  • Ability to collaborate with a large variety of teams and personalities in Engineering, Quality, Program Management, Finance, Supply Chain, and Operations
  • Knowledge of how to drive external vendors and work cooperatively while optimizing for Lunar’s interests

Our Compensation Philosophy: Our goal is to ensure that all Lunar Energy employees are fairly compensated. Please note that the salary range information that follows is a good faith estimate for this position provided pursuant to the Pay Transparency for Pay Equity Act for California applicants. The salary range estimate for this position depending on level of experience is: $140k - $165k USD.

The actual offer, reflecting the total compensation package & benefits, will be at the company’s sole discretion, and determined by factors including but not limited to years of experience, job level, geographic location, and other relevant business considerations.
