What we do:ÂThe Senior Compliance Specialist, Export, works in the Trade Compliance Group team to provide comprehensive and proactive export controls support to the growing Supernal business – particularly to the engineering and procurement/supply chain departments. While we provide a checklist of preferred and ideal lists of technical/subject matter skills and/or experience, above all, true ideal candidates are those with shown proactive, collaborative, and diligent, approach who can exercise good compliance judgment in support of the business mission.
This position will report directly to the Senior Counsel as head of the Trade Compliance Group and will be based in our Washington DC, Irvine, California, or Fremont, California office. This is not an attorney position.
This position will be required to work on-site 5 days a week.

Candidate should be familiar with and capable of determining export jurisdictions and classifying items/technology, BIS licensing process and SNAP-R, deemed exports, technology control plans, and end user certificates. Candidate should understand the importance of diligently keeping records of all analysis related to the aforementioned matters.
- Review purchase requisitions and purchase orders to identify potential export and/or import risks, coordinate and collect supplier export classification information, and pro-actively find solutions to potential issues
- Engage collaboratively with Supernal procurement and supply chain groups to support their work
- Routinely update the Senior Counsel on current and potential export controls matters/issues
- Assist as needed with general export compliance training, briefings, and required processes
- Assist in the development and continuous improvement of guidance documents, export controls manual, technology control plans, and other policy and/or process documents
- Perform first review and coordination to complete end user certificates, classification requests, IT access requests for non-US persons, and other export controls analysis
- Maintain auditable records of all documents pertaining to import and export
- Coordinate export license compliance, ensuring Supernal entities follow the regulatory and license conditions placed on approved licenses
- Provide technical guidance to various internal collaborators regarding the set up and execution of supply chains
- Manage and respond to restricted party screenings
- Other export compliance related duties, where aligned with prior experience
- May require up to 10% of domestic and international travel
- Pro-active, solutions oriented and collaborative demeanor a must
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively convey export controls concepts to people not familiar with such concepts a must
- Effective working with and briefing various employee and management levels regarding a range of export controls issues
- Proven track record to solve sophisticated problems
- Comfortable working with U.S. Government agency personnel on technical inquiries
- Proactive delivery of communication and follow-up
- Proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams
- Able to independently prioritize and accomplish work within time constraints yet able to exercise good judgment in reaching out for help from rest of the team
- Willing to travel when needed – approximately 5-10% - mostly to other Supernal sites
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Engineering or technical background a plus but not required
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in various aspects of export controls work
- Experience working with aerospace and commercial technologies an advantage
- Good-to-have experience/skills include familiarity with INCOTERMS, import matters, logistics, and contract clauses related to export and shipping terms
- Experience with SAP and other data sharing platforms
- Understanding of EU export controls
- Some familiarity with export controls of the Republic of Korea
- Import experience
