The Sr Data Engineer provides business analysis and information delivery capabilities to the Office of the Chief Underwriting Officer (OCUO), which is located in Hartford, CT. The individual uses data to help identify product and underwriting issues and concerns, gives OCUO the visibility to the book of business, assists with Internet of Things (IoT) Innovation initiatives, and performs other project tasks to help OCUO meet its business goals.
OCUO establishes the common framework for P&C product and underwriting to help realize the full potential of our product capabilities and underwriting expertise. The Sr Data Engineer will work with colleagues in OCUO, Insurance Risk Management, Data Science, as well as business unit Product, Underwriting and Quality Management to address both ongoing and emerging business issues. This role provides an analytical problem solver the opportunity to gain insurance business knowledge in all business segments and lines of business.
The Sr Data Engineer reports to the AVP, OCUO Program Management, and is expected to be a self-driven problem solver who requires minimal supervision. The Sr Data Engineer performs various aspects of data compilation, research, analysis, recommendation, presentation, enhancement and maintenance. Data formats and tools include, but are not limited to, Oracle, Excel, Access, Business Objects, Python, Dremio and Tableau.

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

Job duties
- Independently solve business questions and problems by developing research models, sourcing data across disparate repositories, developing data mining approaches, designing data capture and analysis processes, and providing solutions to challenging data issues.
- Plan and build tools to capture or uncover product or underwriting insight.
- Develop queries and code to provide answers to ad hoc business issues and questions.
- Perform ongoing production tasks by envisioning and building automation, monitoring for outliers, and enhancing existing data tools and programs.
- Maintain documentation and other data design artifacts that define business data requirements and handling rules.
- Perform data or statistical analysis across multiple business units and processes.
- Lead and/or perform projects to provide value-added findings, solutions and recommendations that are complete, clear, well written and appropriate for the audience.
- Provide thought leadership and recommend possible solutions to support and address data related needs in OCUO initiatives.
- Serve as liaison, advisor and consultant among business and functional unit stakeholders, and foster open communication.
- 2+ years in Python programming
- 2+ years in SQL programming
- Proficiency in business analytics tools (Business Objects, Tableau)
- Experience in building Excel models with functions, macros and VBA
- Writing and documentation skills for programs and codes
- Experience with Dremio is a plus
- P&C insurance industry experience is a plus
- Critical thinking skills that lead to findings, solutions and positive business outcomes
- Intellectual curiosity demonstrated by as professional history of asking relevant questions and taking appropriate actions
- Forward-looking and continuous improvement mindset
- Strong relationship building / interpersonal and influencing skills
- Ability to effectively communicate through written and verbal means
- Bachelor's degree in business analytics, statistics, computer science, or equivalent
