The Senior Director of Advanced Technologies provides R&D leadership, functional management, and coordination of all activities surrounding early-stage invention, technology development, and translation of technologies to product development for BD Biosciences. This role also serves as the owner of the technology roadmap for the business and is charged with evaluation of relevant external technologies for potential incorporation into BD Biosciences' portfolio via organic or inorganic means. The ideal candidate for this role will serve as a transformative leader for technology development within BD Biosciences and is encouraged to collaborate with all business platform and marketing leaders in order to help define the future technology needs for the business.

The ideal candidate for this role will have significant prior experience with innovation, intellectual property development, and new product development in the life sciences space. Candidates with comparable experience in adjacent spaces will also be considered. This role reports directly to the Worldwide Vice President of R&D for BD Biosciences, serves as a member of the R&D Leadership Team, and will lead a team of approximately 15 associates. A hybrid on-site/remote working arrangement for this role is a possibility.

As cell analysis and flow cytometry are highly multi-disciplinary fields, the successful candidate should have significant technical expertise in one or more of the following areas:

Flow cytometry

Fluorescence microscopy

Optical Spectroscopy

Life science instrumentation development

Algorithm development in the life sciences

Additionally, a strong understanding of the life science (or related) commercial markets, product development in a regulated environment, as well as experience running an R&D organization are a plus. Demonstrated ability both hiring and successfully leading top technical talent is required.

Responsibilities:

Functional responsibility for an early-stage innovation-focused function within BD Biosciences. Lead a cross-functional team of hardware, systems, software, and biology experts to invent, prototype, and develop our next-generation technologies that provide step-change capabilities to our products. This specifically includes:

• Development and ownership of a technology vision and technology roadmap for BD Biosciences.
• Invention and innovation to help fill the innovation funnel via organic developments, as well as identification and evaluation of inorganic opportunities.
• Transfer of innovations from innovation teams to product development teams in an efficient manner.
• Serving as a key externally facing representative of BD Biosciences to the industry and scientific community.
• Serving as a key partner to our strategic innovation, business development, and platform marketing teams.
• Recruiting elite talent to BD Biosciences to further the mission of increasing our reputation as an innovative and agile organization.

Qualifications:

• Ph.D. or equivalent experience in an engineering, life sciences, or related subject area.
• Proven track record of innovation and impact in either an industrial or academic setting.
• 7+ years experience in a field relevant to flow cytometry or single cell analysis.
• Life science product development experience is a plus.
• People management experience, leading teams of up to approximately 15 associates.
• Proven track record of building a team of highly innovative and technical team members in a competitive talent environment.
