What You'll Be Doing in the role of Sr. Director
The Senior Director, Public Relations and Communications is responsible for the planning, development and execution of Komen's public relations and communications strategy.
The Sr. Director will develop a world-class communications plan and directly manage communications activities that promote, enhance and protect the organization's brand reputation.
The Sr. Director will be responsible for the development, integration, and implementation of a broad range of public relations activities supporting the strategic direction and positioning of the organization, its leadership, mission programs and community engagement. They will develop strategy and execute on all media relations with the goal of advancing Komen's position with relevant constituents and drive broader awareness and donor support for the organization. This role is responsible for external and internal communications and oversees a team responsible for securing earned and paid media locally, regionally and nationally.
This role monitors and integrates current news, announcements, content, and information into Komen's news and media efforts. Works collaboratively with colleagues and must be an expert in modern public relations best practices, media distribution and monitoring tools.
What You Will Bring to the Table
Implement and evolve strategic public relations and communications plans.
Lead a diversely skilled communications team.
Cultivate national and local media relationships that elevates Komen's exposure, awareness, perception, and trust.
Serve as a spokesperson on media interactions that promote and/or impact the organization while bringing a positive company image to the public.
Promote a high-performance environment of continuous improvement, media engagement, thoughtful planning, and preparedness.
Secure speaking engagements and media opportunities for Komen leadership, and prepare spokespersons with talking points, speeches, presentations, or other supporting material as needed.
Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budget, vendors, planning, and staff development and performance.
Ensure quality control of all information released.
Identify challenges and emerging issues, and preemptively plan and manage strategy, messaging and solutions with leadership team and staff.
Support organizational partner recognition associated with strategic Komen programs.
Be at the forefront of news and information associated with breast cancer research and advancements by partnering with Komen mission and scientific leaders.
We Already Know You Will Also Have
Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with top tier reporters and editors, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements.
Extensive successful writing and editing experience (externally focused) with a variety of media.
Demonstrated experience, leadership and results in developing and managing a comprehensive strategic communications and media relations program to advance an organization's mission and goals.
A minimum of 5 years experience in a national non-profit environment, working directly on public relations and communications.
Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output.
Experience in building, mentoring, and coaching a team of public relations specialists.
Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs.
Energetic, flexible, collaborative and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical initiatives.
Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills.
Passion for Komen's mission.
Minimum 15 years experience in a management role either in-house or with an agency.
Minimum Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field is required.
Possible travel to local market events - Up to 15%

Competitive salary range of $100k - $145k, exact compensation ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job level, internal equity and budget. Exact salary offers will be determined by factors such as the candidate's skills, experience and geographic location.

Komen provides a remote and/or home based working environment for all active employees. Komen defines remote as the ability to work from any physical location within the U.S. where an employee can perform specified work duties without disruption or distraction. Komen defines home-based roles as positions that are required to reside in a specific market. Work schedules for both remote and home based are determined by the organizational needs of each department.
