Job Summary & Responsibilities
We are see k ing a seasoned Engineering Manager at the Senior Director Level , to lead the leaders of the Engineering resources in our retirement and we alth business unit.
Y ou will be responsible for shaping, overseeing, and driving the technology strategy and value-based outcomes -encompassing people, processes, and systems-while developing a team of high performing engineering talents .
Y our day-to-day efforts will focus on moving our teams toward a product based operating model and ensuring the agile delivery of both internal and external solutions through a continuous discovery and delivery process . This will be done collaboratively with product management leaders and the leaders of other d epartments.
The Sr. Director of Software Engineering will report to the Managing Director of Software Engineering and Enterprise Architecture in the Information Technology Department .
Duties & Responsibilities:
Through the successful execution of these responsibilities, the software engineer ing leader will make significant contributions to the overall achievements of our company's strategies :
- Contributing to setting companywide vision and strategy
- Creating and executing team level strategies that define the target state of our systems and team topologies
- Recruiting, onboarding, developing, and inspiring engineering leaders, engineers, and product development team members
- Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, and analytical skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively across different audiences and varying levels both within and outside of the organization
- Transforming from working in a project-based approach to a product-based (product operating model) way of working , constantly m easuring and delivering outcomes while driving a continuous improvement expectation
- Partnering with product leaders and product management roles to coach teams in continuous discovery and continuous delivery
- Moving teams toward continuous delivery and ability to release incremental value frequently via test first, automation, and other DevOps disciplines
- Using user/customer centric discovery and experimentation to innovate and iterate towards the ultimate solution
- Setting standards and measuring the quality, efficiency, and time to market of the engineering process
- Designing and delivering for 24 x 7 availability in a complex, batch and real-time driven environment ; ensuring solutions meet non-functional requirements, such as security, performance, maintainability, scalability, usability, and reliability
- Effectively manage relevant 3rd party vendor relationships, while demonstrating excellent vendor management skills
- Actively pursuing continuous professional growth by staying updated on new development tools, programming techniques, and computing equipment. Engaging in educational opportunities, keeping informed through professional publications, nurturing personal and professional networks, and actively participating in relevant professional organizations.
- Actively manage costs and finances for scope of responsibility

Preferred Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- 15+ years of experience in software product development or software quality assurance in an Agile and product-based way of delivering .
- Bachelor's degree preferred in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical/ Electronics Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or similar/related Engineering/Science based disciplines.
- Certifications in Leadership, Project Management, Agile, Cloud, Development, Architecture, Lean Six Sigma, ITIL, etc. are welcomed but not required .

- Strategic Thinking : the ability to analyze and evaluate complex situations, anticipate future trends, and develop long-term plans that align with organizational goals, ensuring effective decision-making and sustainable success .
- Problem-Solving and Analytical Skills: Software engineer ing leaders must possess strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to analyze complex technical challenges. They should be able to break down problems into manageable components and devise / coach on effective solutions.
- Software Product Development Lifecycle: Familiarity with the software development lifecycle (SDLC) is crucial. This includes understanding requirements gathering, system design, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance in an Agile/Scaled Agile manner. Experience with Scrum, Kanban, Extreme Programming, or other outcome based iterative development approach required .
- Knowledge of Development Tools and Frameworks: Engineering leader should be knowledgeable in applicable d evelopment tools and frameworks relevant to their domain. This can include version control systems (e.g., Git), integrated development environments (e.g., Visual Studio Code, IntelliJ), and frameworks specific to web development (e.g., React, Angular) or mobile app development (e.g., Flutter, React Native).
- Collaboration and Communication: Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams is vital for software engineer ing leaders . Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, enable them to clearly express ideas, collaborate with colleagues, and convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Continuous Learning: The field of software engineering and product development is constantly evolving, so a mindset of continuous learning is crucial. Staying updated with new technologies and industry trends is highly valued.
- Testing and Debugging: Understanding of automated software testing techniques, including unit testing, integration testing, and debugging, is important for ensuring the reliability and quality of software applications.
- Knowledge of Security Best Practices: Strong understanding of secure coding practices and the ability to apply them effectively in software development. Ability to implement security controls, conduct code reviews, and perform security-focused testing, ensuring adherence to industry standards and minimizing the risk of potential exploits.
- Compliance : Familiarity with regulatory compliance requirements and industry-specific security standards, such as GDPR, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, and ISO 27001. Ability to design and implement software solutions that meet these compliance standards, ensuring the protection of sensitive data and maintaining regulatory compliance.
- Cloud System Design and Architecture: Software engineer ing leaders should have a solid understanding of cloud-based system design principles and architecture patterns. This includes scalability, performance optimization, and the ability to design robust and efficient software systems.
- Adaptability and Flexibility: Software engineer ing leaders often encounter changing requirements, tight deadlines, and evolving technologies. Being adaptable, flexible, and able to quickly learn and adapt to new tools and frameworks is crucial.
