What you will do - Essential Responsibilities

• Modernize legacy database platforms, develop automation, and expand cloud database capabilities
• Leverage knowledge of new technologies to shift CarMax into purpose-built database systems. Contribute toward creation and attainment of a company-wide DevOps database strategy that will truly enable application teams within the database space and allow for faster product delivery
• Perform database administration duties to help support, maintain, and troubleshoot existing enterprise-wide database instances, while concurrently driving modernization efforts forward. Provide analysis, design, development, and deployment support for customer database requirements
• Collaborate with internal customers/development teams and provide expertise in database selection, architecture, design, and sizing. Manage database access, including user, role, profile, and object-level permissions. Provide support and guidance to application developers with SQL tuning, data modeling and physical database design
• Continually investigate methods to improve database reliability and availability. Proactive database performance monitoring, tuning and best practices implementation. Provide input on capacity planning, high availability solutions, and strategies for upgrades and patching. Create and manage database reports, visualizations, and dashboards. Manage database auditing and compliance
• Provide 24x7 support for critical production systems. Be available for after-hours maintenance activities. Diagnose and troubleshoot database errors
• Stay on top of industry trends and best practices to continuously improve what we do and ensure our customer and associate experience is the best it can be

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related Technology field or equivalent experience
• 2-5 years of relevant work experience and background with the latest technologies and features used within SQL Server 2016/2017/2019, Replication, Clustering, and Always-On. Experience with building and managing SQL Server databases in Azure is highly desired.
• 2-5 years of strong working experience with SQL Server development and administration. Thorough understanding of SQL Server security and architecture. Must have expertise in Always-On, backup/restore, performance tuning
• Experience with SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (SYBASE ASE) and Oracle, on Linux
• Hands-on experience with running database servers in a virtual environment.
• Demonstrable experience working with large databases across public cloud and multiple datacenters. Creating database instances using infrastructure-as-code techniques. Utilizing configuration management tools to provision databases (preferably Ansible)
• Experience working with Azure SQLDB, CosmosDB, MongoDB, Oracle RAC and Data guard is preferred
• Passion for automation and eliminating repetitive processes. Experience with CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub, Ansible, Liquibase, Azure DevOps (VSTS), Team City, to deploy and automate database processes. Ancillary database tool creation using modern coding languages (Java, C#, Python, etc.)
• Must have very good knowledge of writing T-SQL queries, power shell and Linux shell scripting. Windows and Linux operating system knowledge is required
• Communicate effectively with a wide range of audience internally and externally
• Continuous learner who is highly motivated to explore and implement emerging technologies

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of one of the following locations and have a Hybrid work arrangement:

• Richmond, VA Technology Innovation Center
• Dallas, TX Technology Hub
• Atlanta, GA CarMax Auto Finance Office
