Job Description

The GitLab DevOps platform empowers 100,000+ organizations to deliver software faster and more efficiently. We are one of the world’s largest all-remote companies with 1,800+ team members and values that guide a culture where people embrace the belief that everyone can contribute.

We're hiring Senior Frontend Engineers for the Product Intelligence group. The Product Intelligence group is focused on providing GitLab's team with data-driven product insights to build a better GitLab. To do this, we build data collection and analytics tools within the GitLab product in a privacy-focused manner. Insights generated from Product Intelligence enable us to identify the best places to invest people and resources, what product categories mature faster, where our user experience can be improved, and how product changes impact the business. You can learn more about what we're building next on the Product Intelligence Direction page.

You will be closely collaborating with counterparts from Engineering, UX, Quality, and Product. You will work across the frontend (Vue.js), interfacing with backend (Ruby on Rails) parts of our application.

This position is 100% remote.

Responsibilities
  1. Develop features and improvements to the GitLab product in a secure, well-tested, and performant way
  2. Assess, design, and build solutions to address use cases involving the analysis and interpretation of highly complex data to arrive at actionable recommendations
  3. Collaborate with Product Management and other stakeholders within Engineering (e.g. UX) to maintain a high bar for quality in a fast-paced, iterative startup environment
  4. Advocate for improvements to product quality, security, and performance
  5. Solve technical problems of large scope and complexity
  6. Craft code that meets our internal standards for style, maintainability, and best practices for a high-scale web environment. Maintain and advocate for these standards through code review
  7. Represent GitLab and its values in public communication around specific projects and community contributions
  8. Confidently ship small features and improvements with minimal guidance and support from other team members. Collaborate with the team on larger projects
Required Qualifications
  1. You have a growth mindset: embracing ambiguity and seeking opportunities to challenge yourself and continuously grow your skills
  2. Significant experience with Javascript in a production environment at scale. Proficiency in other coding languages (Ruby, Golang, Python) are a bonus.
  3. Experience working with modern frontend frameworks (eg. React, Vue.js, Angular)
  4. Proficiency in the English language, both written and verbal, sufficient for achieving consensus and success in a remote and largely asynchronous work environment
  5. Demonstrated capacity to clearly and concisely communicate about complex technical, architectural, and/or organizational problems and propose thorough iterative solutions
  6. Experience with performance and optimization problems and a demonstrated ability to both diagnose and prevent these problems
  7. You have demonstrated the ability to onboard and integrate with an organization long-term. Within the last 5 years, you've worked at one company for at least 2 years.
  8. Experience owning a project from concept to production, including proposal, discussion, and execution.
  9. Self-motivated and self-managing, with strong organizational skills.
  10. Comfort working in a highly agile, intensely iterative software development process
  11. Positive and solution-oriented mindset
  12. An inclination towards communication, inclusion, and visibility
  13. You are familiar with working in an open source environment
  14. You are comfortable working in a cross-functional organization
  15. You are able to thrive in a fully remote organization
  16. You are able to use GitLab
  17. You share our values, and work in accordance with those values
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience working with data analytics and building visualizations and dashboards using technologies similar to D3.js or Echarts.
  2. Experience building data analytics solutions for product-focused teams
  3. Experience in a peak performance organization, preferably a tech startup
  4. Experience with the GitLab product as a user or contributor
  5. Experience working in a global, distributed, or otherwise multi-cultural team
  6. Enterprise software company experience
  7. Experience scaling a successful SaaS product
  8. Computer science education or equivalent experience
  9. Passionate about/experienced with open source and developer tools

Professional Experience

At GitLab, due to the pace we're moving, people joining our team will be expected to have significant professional experience in the primary programming language of the specialty that they'll be joining. Because the majority of our codebase is written in Ruby, even in specialized roles, a knowledge of Ruby and Ruby on Rails or a desire to learn and contribute is necessary.

For context, see this merge request with some history on this policy.

Primary programming language

Some specialties within GitLab are using primary programming languages other than Ruby. These programming languages are defined as being primary in terms of an engineer's experience and what they'll be writing day to day. The expectation from the specialty is that engineers will have extensive experience in this primary programming language as well as some level of understanding of Ruby and, Ruby on Rails.
