Role Summary
The Functional Safety (FuSa) engineer leads the functional safety efforts for Magna's New Mobility for assigned production development programs with a focus on autonomous delivery devices including but not limited to Last Mile, Sidewalk and Middle Mile Devices. He/she provides guidance and leadership to the program(s) team in delivering the work/products for the overall safety cases and in complying with ISO 26262.
The FuSa Engineer is responsible for supporting the development team(s) in the creation and execution of the overall FuSa plan and Safety concept for the Magna New Mobility Groud, Working from industry, internal and external specifications, the engineer not only performs, but is responsible for guiding engineering activities as it pertains to functional safety. The engineer will independently plan the safety activities of a project, carry out work assignments and serve as the technical authority regarding functional safety. These activities shall begin during the concept phase of a project and extend through the serial development phase to the end of production.
Key Responsibilities
  • Tailors the safety case of the program in collaboration with the Program Director and the Technical Leads.
  • Provides guidance and support to the program team in the development of their work products per the safety case in compliance with ISO 26262.
  • Supports the Engineering Director in the development of the Development Interface Agreement (DIA) with the responsible party (e.g. internal pre-development lead, external: customer).
  • Develops and owns the functional safety program plan in collaboration with the program leads.
  • Creates and maintains all functional safety processes, templates, and guidelines in accordance with the FuSa industry standards.
  • Supports the SW tools qualification process in support of the program in collaboration with the Quality team.
  • Provides coaching to the program team in the interpretation of the relevant clauses of ISO 26262; solicits support from the functional safety consultants / experts when necessary.
  • Tracks the program's functional safety issues and drives for their closure.
  • Support the functional managers with the verification reviews of the work products per GPEP and ISO 26262.
  • Supports the functional safety manager in carrying out the Confirmation Measures per ISO 26262 (Confirmation Reviews, Safety Audit, and Safety Assessment)
  • Provides coaching to the program's suppliers in the area of functional safety; solicits support from the functional manager in this area as necessary.
  • Provides assessment of the program status in terms of functional safety to the functional safety manager.

Key Responsibilities (Continued)
  • Perform work assignments as a highly competent Functional Safety engineer, requiring independent design, implementation and testing of the control software components.
  • Support development of safety and secure systems according to ISO26262 and ISO / SAE 21434.
  • Create safety & security plans in order to plan and track safety activities within projects.
  • Work with project teams to provide information about the progress of work products and special tasks.
  • Ensure compliance with the relevant safety and security standards.
  • Support functional safety audits and assessments.
  • Moderate and create an internal preliminary hazard analysis and risk assessment.
  • Support product concept development from a Functional Safety perspective (Item Definition, HARA, functional safety concept), aligning safety requirements between OEM and suppliers.
  • Analysis and evaluation of special customer-relevant security requirements.
  • Develop functional and technical safety concepts for autonomous delivery devices.
  • Support the safety development on the system, Hardware and Software level (develop safety requirements, support related departments).
  • Lead and/or support safety analyses on the system, hardware and software level.
  • Support production planning and continuous development of safety and security related products.

Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering/ Systems Engineering/ Electrical Engineering/ Computer Sciences / Engineering or equivalent (Master's preferred)
  • Min. 5 years' relevant product and or technology experience regarding the Responsibility/ Activities (listed above) for automotive electronics serial development projects (mandatory).

Qualifications
  • Functional understanding of complex mechatronic systems.
  • Knowledge of the ISO 26262 and the IEC 61508 standards required.
  • Knowledge of cyber security (ISO / SAE 21434) is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Automotive SPICE (ISO 15504) is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Software and Hardware development processes required.
  • Skills for understanding and analysis of complex mechatronic systems strongly preferred.
  • PTC RM / SI skills strongly preferred.
  • Medini analyze skills strongly preferred.
  • Moderation and problem-solving techniques.
  • Working knowledge in computer-based software, strong organizational/communication skills, and ability to work with others in a team environment
  • Must be able to travel internationally on an occasional basis
  • Valid driver's license

Physical Demands / Work Environment
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear and use hands to finger, handle, and feel. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms and have adequate mobility to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Responsible for working in compliance with the provisions of the Health and Safety Act as well as any rules or standards otherwise specified by OSHA or MIOSHA or any other government regulations. Expected to exercise caution in all work activities and report any unsafe conditions, injuries, or near misses to the appropriate supervisor.
