What you will be doing in the role of a Sr. Manager of External Communications
Responsible for supporting Susan G. Komen local and regional public relations needs including stewarding local media relationships and translating Komen's mission impact and programs to compelling, engaging news-worthy stories. Leverage opportunities for proactive media outreach on Komen mission impact, such as the organization's annual research grant announcements and breakthroughs, state-based advocacy and Komen thought leadership on issues and current events. Works in collaboration with Regional Vice Presidents and local market community development teams to support media relations and public relations for local and regional market activities and inquiries, providing relevant information and messaging, preparing spokespeople, and providing regular reporting. Communications managers will be part of the national communications team.
What you will bring to the table
Local and Regional Brand PR
- Cultivate and enhance collaborative working relationships with the press and trade publications in local and regional markets to secure high-quality earned media placements.
- Proactively position and pitch brand campaigns and communication priorities, and adapt strategies to secure targeted story placement, media coverage and speaking opportunities.
- Develop and write persuasive press releases, media advisories and articles. Help maintain and update local website information-make updates and add content.
Local Event PR
- Work with local community development teams to provide PR support for all local events, including the local Race for the Cure, and MORE THAN PINK Walks and other fundraising programs. This includes pre-event storytelling and on-event coverage.
Cultivation/Stewardship/Training
- Work with local Executive Directors to identify, train and leverage local ambassadors, including survivors/patients/local leadership and fundraisers to be used in national and local storytelling.
- Respond to reporter inquiries, and coordinate interviews with local market, mission, and other Komen staff.
Local Media Stewardship
- Build and steward relationships with local media, including media sponsors.
Localization of mission
- In collaboration with marcom colleagues and local market Executive Directors, localize Komen communication priorities and programs, positioning each with stories of local impact and consequence.
Reporting
- Provide regular reporting on local communications activities and results.
We already know you will also have
- Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in public relations, journalism, communications, or related field required to effectively perform the job's responsibilities.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Knowledge of a variety of communication formats.
- Ability to manage assignments, meet multiple deadlines and coordinate with other stakeholders.
- Knowledge of AP Style.
- Proactive, collaborative, and positive strategic thinker, willing to take smart risks and lead initiatives with confidence and tasks to completion.
- Experience with local and/or regional market media relations and/or event focused public relations.
- Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Existing relationships with journalists in at least one of the major markets within the area of support a plus. Exp.: (Central: Chicago, Dallas, Houston, St. Louis)
- Ability to travel up to 15%.

Komen defines remote as the ability to work from any physical location within the U.S. where an employee can perform specified work duties without disruption or distraction. Komen defines home-based roles as positions that are required to reside in a specific market. Work schedules for both remote and home based are determined by the organizational needs of each department.
