Raytheon Intelligence and Space (RIS) is looking for a Senior Modeling Systems Engineer to work in a fast-paced Agile development environment for modernizing science-driven applications to operate on cloud platforms.Our team provides acceleration of community-developed scientific and technological enhancements into the operational applications for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and improved Research to Operations (R2O).
Primary Responsibilities:
• Enhancing UFS Community Modeling Coupler with FMS exchange grid functionality, by:
1. Ingesting GFDL grid specs for use with ESMF exchange grid
2. Conducting conservation tests for exchanges using the exchange grid functionality within ESMF
3. Providing support for 2nd order conservative exchange scheme
4. Performing exchange grid optimization and compare performance with and without the enhancements
• Testing functional duplicates of put_to_xgrid and get_from_xgrid using the ESMF exchange grid and functions (can use test_xgrid unit test from FMS to verify the functionality).
• Deliver a prototype of the enhanced CMEPS with FMS functionality with well-defined regression tests pending discussion with the UFS MRW or SRW application teams
• Participate in all aspects of the software development lifecycle from user story generation, through design, development, automated testing and operational support
• Participate as a member of an Agile team and work with other team members to review user stories, estimate effort to build functionality supporting user stories and participate in sprint review
• Other duties as assigned

Security Clearance:
The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
Required Skills:
• Experience with coupled modeling systems and frameworks
• At least 1 year of Lifecycle Development experience (e.g. Requirements, Design, Testing)
• Experience using programming languages such as Fortran, C, Python, or C++ in an Agile environment.
• Knowledge of debugging with compiled, parallel codes (e.g. MPI, OpenMP, pthreads)
• Ability to communicate technical information to management and the scientific community, verbally and in writing
• Ability to work as a member of small team using the Scrum methodology
• Proven ability to prioritize and execute multiple concurrent project activities
Desired Skills:
• Experience running a workflow (CIME, ROCOTO, ECFLOW, CYLC)
• Knowledge of any one of atmospheric models (e.g., FV3 or MPAS dycores, CCPP physics package, WRF, ECMWF IFS), or Earth system models or their components (e.g., CM3/4, SPEAR, CESM, ESMF, CICE5/6, MOM5/6, FV3, NEMS, and WaveWatch III ).
• Knowledge of Agile or Lean-based development principles (e.g. Sprints, Scrums, Backlogs)
• Knowledge of Cloud Services in a Commercial Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS) or Platform as Service (PAAS) environment
The salary range for this role is $70,000 to $152,000; however, Raytheon Technologies considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.
Required Education & Experience:
5 years of relevant experience with a BS degree (Typically STEM focused - Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics)
