We are seeking Sr. Science Writer candidates to act as the lead writer for the Earth Science News Team on the Space and Earth Science Data Analysis (SESDA) contract. SESDA supports a broad range of science disciplines, including solar and space plasma physics, astrophysics and astronomy, planetary studies, atmospheric science and climatology, oceanography, land processes, geodynamics and solid earth geographics. It also provides for the development and use of scientific computer systems; engineering data analysis systems; engineering efforts to develop new technologies for scientific instrumentation; software application development and implementation; and computer system management for science exploration research, and the SESDA team members support these efforts.

This Sr. Science Writer position reports to the Prime Contractor Earth Science Group Manager and the Subcontractor Program Manager for the SESDA Contract. Below are the Sr. Science Writer/Lead responsibilities, but are not limited to:

Responsibilities:

• Manage and advise writers and video producers on story development, along with mentoring interns.
• Lead communications campaigns for field missions, topical campaigns and major Earth science events.
• Liaison with the Earth System Science Pathfinder Office on communications products for their funded missions.
• Assign and edit press releases, web features, and other content for www.nasa.gov and social media.
• Work as Editor for the NASA Earth Expeditions Blog.
• Edit and approve social media content. Post stories to www.nasa.gov with the Drupal content management system.
• Answer media queries, assist Goddard PAO with scientist interviews, and promote NASA Earth Science with partner agencies, universities, and media outlets.
• Provide monthly accomplishments/highlights.
• Support annual review efforts by providing employee performance inputs to management, including obtaining feedback from government customers.
• Coordinate with management on hiring for new and replacement science writer positions, including participating in developing job descriptions, screening resumes, coordinating interviews, and participating in hiring decisions.
• Pass along requests and/or status to PM.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in a related field
• Experience in a lead or manager position
• Minimum of 5 years relevant lead or management experience
• Established customer relationships
• Demonstrated ability to develop exceptional customer relationships
• Experience in leading groups of at least 5-10 employees
• Demonstrated experience managing teams in a dynamic operational environment
• Strong consensus building and team building skills
