Summary:

The Sr. Scientist / Associate Director in R&D Operation will work closely with leadership, internal team members and external CROs to help establish and maintain R&D Operations at Gossamer Bio. Key responsibilities for this position will be to oversee compound management, laboratory operations and shipping and receiving activities. This role will be responsible for establishing and executing SOPs and work instructions for all aspects of laboratory operations and will be accountable for the proper training of and execution by team members. This candidate must be able to excel in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment and effectively manage and prioritize activities for the R&D Operations Team. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establish a seamless working interface between R&D Operations and Research Departments including Chemistry, Biology, DMPK and CMC.
  • Manage the Nonclinical Operations Team, coordinate staff roles and responsibilities, and foster inter-team relationships to enhance capabilities and adaptability.
  • Direct and coordinate laboratory operation activities to ensure that services are provided on schedule within quality and cost objectives. Accountable for meeting timelines for compound requests and collaborating with scientists to facilitate compound request requirements. Provide compound management support for high-throughput screens as needed.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve sample workflows associated with storage, manual neat/weigh operations, liquid handling, and delivery of samples to internal and external teams.
  • Create and maintain SOPs and work instructions for critical processes, implement these processes and be accountable for training of all employees within Laboratory Operations.
  • Establish processes for laboratory support and replenishment of consumables to support Chemistry, Biology and DMPK functional teams.
  • Manage processes associated with international and domestic shipments between collaborators and research sites, ensuring proper documentation is maintained.
  • Assist in evaluation, purchase and installation of capital equipment for establishment of the compound management operation and implement plans for long term instrument certification and maintenance.
  • Test/Validate changes to software, hardware, and procedures. Proactively seek improvements to usability of these systems and production timelines.
  • Establish/maintain a generative safety culture and ensure adherence to safety policies and adhere to site employee health and safety (EHS) requirements. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain effective oral and written communication to Research and CMC colleagues and provide support to ensure timelines are met.

 JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • A BS/MS in chemical, biological, engineering sciences or related field with 10+ years working full time in an industry laboratory and must have experience in all aspects of R&D Operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as an R&D Operations leader and experience managing and mentoring direct reports including FTE and Contract positions.
  • Ability to adapt in a fast-changing environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and working familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Highly collaborative, self-motivated individual with a strong desire to contribute to high-functioning team.
  • Possess the ability to work with high attention-to-detail and strong record-keeping.
  • Extensive experience maintaining laboratory instruments and equipment, maintaining an inventory of neat and solubilized samples and inventory management systems, Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)/Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN).
  • Experience shipping/receiving both internationally and domestically.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • This position is an onsite role based in our San Diego office.
