Job Description

Volley Automation is a fully-automated parking service. Our goal is to create sustainable parking solutions that are compact, efficient, and can be reconfigured and repurposed throughout a building's life. We also make EV-charging easier and more efficient. Are you intrigued by the idea of putting cars away with robots? Do you hate parking? Do you love parking? If so, we have job openings here at Volley!

Volley’s engineering ecosystem is wide ranging: complex robotics systems that move cars, bay stations that measure vehicle dimensions with 3D lidar scanners, algorithmic multi-agent planning software, and frontend user applications for mobile and web. Our infrastructure is deployed primarily on-premise, but also includes services on AWS, iOs/Android, IoT devices, and AGVs (robots).

We are looking for a Sr. Software Engineer for Algorithms & Planning to design and implement the algorithms and autonomy that orchestrate our automated garage robotics. These algorithms are central to all Volley operations, and involve commanding multiple robots to move literally tons of mass in tight configurations. Come help us solve multi-agent, discrete, continuous-time planning problems to a high degree of robustness, efficiency, and safety. You will oversee new feature development, improve existing features, and leverage cloud infrastructure to conduct large-scale evaluations.
Responsibilities:

  • Technical leadership around architecture and implementation improvements to our existing planning software - including improvements in architecture, performance, efficiency, etc.
  • Participate actively in technical planning, grooming, and coordination of the team’s work.
  • Understanding state-of-the-art algorithms and best practices, balanced with a shrewd and pragmatic ability to ship code regularly.
  • Develop algorithms that are robust, adaptive in response to failure, and scalable to tens of robots and thousands of parking spaces.
  • Quantify algo & planning performance via cloud-based simulation at scale. Facilitate hands-on testing with real garage installations.
  • Collaborate across the organization to understand our customers, and generalize our planning solutions to tailor to diverse needs.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Solid base knowledge of an object-oriented programming language (data structures & algorithms). Working knowledge of C++ and Python preferred.
  • Strong experience with Git, Docker, Unix/Linux, CLI.
  • Experience with cloud environments, preferably AWS.
  • Familiarity with TDD and CI/CD methodologies preferred.
  • At least 2-4 years of experience as a software engineer supporting customers / software in production. Proven track record of incremental, well-tested and reviewed feature additions.
  • Demonstrated understanding of algorithmic complexity for single or multi-threaded applications as well as multi-agent systems.
  • Any amount of experience in multi-agent centralized path planning, optimal assignment algorithms, graph search algorithms, or mixed integer linear programming preferred.

Nice to have:

  • BS (MS preferred) in CS/ME/EE or similar STEM discipline.
  • Experience with ROS2 and simulation/visualization tools.
  • Knowledge of MAPF algorithms such as conflict-based search.
