Position Purpose
The Sr. Test Development Engineer will support the testing strategy for manufactured products, ensuring compliance to all Sleep Number criteria with product quality as the primary goal. Subsequent responsibilities include documenting and implementing the automated test equipment and test programs for design verification and production testing This role will actively participate in New Product Development (NPD) activities, working from design through implementation of hardware/software solutions, processes, measurement and maintenance of all processes. The ideal candidate will be process driven, forward thinking and have a proven track record of successfully leading the development and implementation of test solutions with a demonstrated continuous improvement mindset.
Primary Responsibilities
The Sr. Test Development Engineer performs a wide range of duties including but not limited to the following:
Technical Expertise
- Authors or edits procedures and documentation through change management process directly related to products.
- Create specifications outlining test strategy based on Product Requirements Document and Technical Requirements Specification, including coverage and exception reports.
- Work with Sourcing to specify, evaluate and procure any hardware or services required to support the testing of products by Sleep Number or its suppliers.
- Designs, develops, and implements cost-effective methods of testing and troubleshooting of systems and equipment for all phases of product development and manufacturing.
- Interfaces with management to present program status, capital requests, or continuous improvement initiatives.
- Lead or Participate in process improvement collaboration, execution, and training with all aspects of Supply Chain.
- Work closely with Sourcing and Engineering to establish the Supply Chain structure to meet the requirements of the full product lifecycle of Sleep Number products.
- Provide support for product development and NPD (value engineering), following APQP activities and ensuring acceptable PPAP packages on time, right first time to ensure flawless launch.
- Support Continuous Improvement activities including warranty, manufacturing process assessment and product enhancement activities.
- Support Design for Excellence activities between Sleep Number and suppliers.
- Manage quality issues in conjunction with key stakeholders, resolving day to day problems, ensuring effective containment and problem resolution for all non-conformances using CAPA and SCAR processes.
- Establish and maintain consistent supplier metrics (process capability, control charts, productivity, measurement quality) for monitoring and reporting through Performance Scorecards.
- Work with Supplier Quality/Development to advance defect identification techniques and reporting capabilities at suppliers
- Actively coach / mentor test engineering peers
Process Management
- Accountable for management of the roadmap and strategy for the production test process
- Lead the enhancement of the specification, evaluation, procurement, acceptance, deployment and change control processes for test hardware and software sets
- Develop, document and maintain processes supporting test development to include Process Flow, Operational Instructions, Training Material and Process Health Metrics
- Provide leadership in the testing process acting as a mentor, trainer and coach across all impacted cross functional teams.
- Ensure alignment of the test development deliverables to the NPD Stage Gate process
- Develop and deploy standardized metrics for all testing processes including monitoring and reporting techniques
Project Management
- Use Project Management skills to manage complete process from Concept through deployment and maintenance of test process/equipment.
- Deliver measurable levels of improvement in testing capabilities to support business goals, improve yields and obtain superior quality/delivery levels.
- Review and maintain NPD/Sustaining project schedules and ensure cross functional alignment
- Communicate timely and complete updates to project owners ensuring actions
Position Requirements
- Minimum of 7+ years in a test development role, in a lean manufacturing environment
- B.S. Electrical or Software Engineering required
- Lean Six Sigma/Green Belt certification a plus
- Experience with Quality Management Systems (QMS)
- Experience with DMAIC Methodology
- Ability to read technical drawings and specifications
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Deep understanding of LabView required
- MS Project, Visio, Sharepoint, PowerBI and standard Office applications
- Statistical Analysis Methods, Design of Experiments (JMP, MiniTab or similar)
- Change Control management
- Critical Path thinking
- Highly effective Project Management skills
- Must be able to travel without restriction as needed, including internationally, up to 20%
