ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Founded in 2004, Brilliant Corners provides innovative housing and housing-related services to California's most vulnerable individuals, with an emphasis on those transitioning from, or at risk of, homelessness or institutionalization. We develop, own and manage multi-family supportive housing and licensed residential care homes, and implement a broad array of scattered-site, one-on-one supportive housing, and clinical case management programs through partnerships with developmental services, homeless services, veterans' services and health care sectors.

Position Summary

Brilliant Corners seeks a highly qualified and motivated individual to be part of the accounting services team of a rapidly growing nonprofit managing a diverse array of government-funded supportive housing properties and service programs. This position supports the Accounting Manager and Senior Accountants in carrying out the responsibilities of the department.

The Staff Accountant is part of the finance team and should be an organized, detail-oriented,resourceful and motivated individual. This position requires experience in the areas of accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliation, data entry and problem-solving. Primary responsibilities include reviewing high volume vendor payments, entering high volume client and funder deposits, applying payments and receipts to the appropriate program and accounts, bank reconciliation, creating invoice supporting documentation, and resolving errors as they arise.

The Staff Accountant will report to the Senior Accountant and will work closely with a team of senior accountants. The Staff Accountant is required to maintain a collaborative working relationship with BC personnel and ensures timely financial obligations by reviewing payments and deposits. Successful performance of the work requires considerable knowledge of governmental accounting principles as well as GAAP and the ability to exercise sound independent judgment within established guidelines.

Location: California (prefer Los Angeles or San Francisco Area), position is primarily remote with occasional in-office requirements

Pay: $60k annually, non-exempt / ($28.85 hourly)

Responsibilities

  • Process A/P including checks, ACH and wires in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring invoices have proper approvals, correct calculations and match printed checks
  • Process A/Rincluding checks, ACH and wires in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring deposits are coded to the appropriate program and accounts
  • Reconcile vendor and client statements, investigating and correcting any discrepancies
  • Address vendor and client inquiriesin a timely, positive and collaborative manner
  • Verify validity of account discrepancies by obtaining and investigating information from internal departments, vendors and customers
  • Post month end accruals, bank reconciliations
  • Provide reporting support to ensure timely submission of invoice reimbursement
  • Assist with external audit preparation
  • Answer accounting and financial questions by researching and interpreting data
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Accountant

  • Requirements

    • Thorough understanding of GAAP requirements.
    • Analytical and detail oriented yet able to look at the whole picture to meet deadlines
    • Ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple priorities and function independently and as a team member.
    • Understanding of concepts, principles and practices of funding agency relations and compliance requirements as well as donor expectations regarding gift stewardship.
    • Excellent computer skills (MS Word, Excel, databases, etc).
    • Sensitivity to homeless people and the issues of homelessness and recovery, and ability to work with people from diverse educational and personal backgrounds.
    • Bachelor's degree in accounting or business with emphasis in accounting, preferred but not required

    Knowledge, Skills and Ability

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical publications, government contracts, leases, regulatory documents, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to write reports that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, boards of directors, and public groups.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as interest, proportions, percentages, and area. Ability to apply basic math and geometry concepts to practical situations. Facility with Microsoft Excel and ability to use a financial calculator.

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical, diagram, and written form and to deal with multiple abstract and concrete variables.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    A valid, clean CA driver's license and a personal insured vehicle preferred.

    Salary range for this position is $59,000 - $67,000 annually. This position is being offered at $60,000 annually.
