Description of Role
With a keen attention to accuracy, you love seeing accounts balance and your GL tie out. You live, breathe, and dream in numbers, and understand not only the way double-entry bookkeeping unlocked the power of commerce, but also launched the modern world. When you hear someone described as ‘a stickler for detail’ you can’t help but thinking it’s a compliment. You’re a puzzle solver who likes applying financial analysis to questions, and enjoys being good at doing so.
As a Staff Accountant, reporting to the Controller, you’ll play a key part in all core financial accounting processes, including monthly/quarterly close, reconciling of accounts, and preparation of financial statements and reports to drive business decision making. As the first person to inhabit this role, you’ll also be a key player in shaping processes and controls to support responsible growth and helping to build a world class finance team.
Core Responsibilities
- Actively participate in the month-end close process, reviewing and analyzing balance sheet and income statement accounts
- Ensure proper valuation of inventory and cost of goods sold
- Prepare monthly accounting entries for various business transactions, including inventory, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accrued expenses, and leases
- Prepare monthly balance sheet account reconciliations with supporting schedules; maintaining all in audit-ready fashion
- Manage the general ledger and all financial records in accordance with US GAAP
- Assist in external audit requirements related including the financial statements footnotes
- Assist in the preparation of tax and other regulatory compliance filings, including business licenses and 1099s
- Build strong vendor relations and oversee database of contracts and calendar of renewal dates
- Assist in developing and maintaining strong internal controls, ensuring quality controls over all transactions and reporting
- May act as a lead, oversee and review the work of one or more A/P specialists, providing coaching and professional development, as needed
- Attend regular functional cross-functional meetings and contribute to continuous improvement efforts
- Prepare and analyze Budget vs. Actuals reporting, suggesting continuous improvements to the financial forecasting and budgeting process
- Conduct ad hoc analyses as requested
- Other duties and special projects as assigned
Requirements
- 4+ years related accounting and external reporting experience
- Undergraduate degree in accounting, finance or economics
- Breadth of experience across accounting functions (accounts payables, vendor management, revenue recognition, accounts receivables, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, etc.)
- Depth of experience in inventory accounting principles and best practices
- Strong knowledge of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and current accounting practices
- Excellent attention to detail, impeccable accuracy, and strong organizational skills
- Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize tasks effectively
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to clearly communicate with teammates
- Advanced skill set with one or more platforms (Quickbooks, NetSuite, SAP, etc.)
- Spreadsheet super user (Excel, google sheets, etc.) skills (pivot tables, conditional aggregation, summary statistics, advanced visualization and reporting, etc.)
- Proven ability to succeed in a dynamic, fast-paced and constantly changing environment
Nice to Haves
- CPA license and/or CPA candidate
- Experience with “Big 8” accounting firm
- Prior experience in eCommerce
- Experience with BI visualization platform (Looker, Tableau, etc.)
- Prior experience as part of a remote-first company
- Passion for sustainability and seafood
The starting salary range for this position is $60,000 - $85,000, commensurate with skills and experience. Wild Alaskan’s benefits package includes health, vision, and dental insurance, 401k, PTO, safe/sick time, vacation, parental leave and more, as well as a delicious box of free fish every month.
