Staff Accountant

Van Metre Companies has a Staff Accountant position available to join our Investment Properties Accounting team!

As the Staff Accountant, you will be responsible for the accounting and financial statement preparation of our residential and commercial properties. Additionally, you will be asked to use your experience and creativity to help identify, develop, and implement efficiencies throughout the Accounting team. 

This is a hybrid remote/in office working environment. As a member of the Van Metre Accounting team, you will work in our Corporate Fairfax office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will be remote the rest of the week. 

Responsibilities:

• Responsible for the accounting of residential and commercial properties:
  • Calculation of management fees
  • Prepare appropriate accruals
  • Review and approve property invoices
  • Work closely with property managers to review operating statements and prepare variance explanations
  • Balance sheet reconciliations
  • Bank reconciliations
  • Keep track of property renovations by unit
  • Track capital expenditures for personal property tax returns
  • Record fixed asset additions and disposals in separate FAS system and record depreciation/disposal entries into Yardi
  • Reconcile security deposit accounts
  • Prepare other various journal entries as needed
• Work independently and collaboratively to help discover and implement efficiencies throughout the accounting department
• Develop methods and procedures to reduce redundancies and help streamline internal processes in preparation for rapid growth
• Assist with site audit
• Complete various tax filings for multiple jurisdictions
• Assist in the budget and re-forecasting process
• Assist in audit work paper preparation at year-end
• Special projects, as requested, and additional duties, as required

Requirements:

• Experience in a position with comparable job duties
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to prioritize work effectively and work independently
• Motivated individual with a lot of energy and a positive attitude
• Computer experience to include intermediate Excel skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
• Proven ability to multitask
• Must be a team player
• Excellent organizational skills
• Must have analytical and problem-solving abilities
