Staff Accountant
Job Description
Working under the Assistant Controller, the Staff Accountant supports the operational effectiveness of the Finance and Accounting department by maintaining the general ledger through reconciling, compiling, reporting, and reviewing financial information on a daily, monthly and annual basis. Additional responsibilities will include developing, implementing, and monitoring operating and accounting procedures, preparation of financial statements, corporate accounting policies, and technical US GAAP Research to ensure compliance. A successful Staff Accountant demonstrates attention to detail, intellectual curiosity, and an appreciation for the impact of their work on business outcomes.
Duties and responsibilities
- Prepare monthly account reconciliations, research, and resolve reconciling items promptly, and ensure that adequate supporting documentation is maintained.
- Perform monthly and year-end close functions, including accruals and preparation, posting, and review of journal entries following the monthly and year-end close schedules.
- Coordinate and collaborate with A/R, A/P, and HR as needed as well as key external departments, such as Marketing, Sales, and Operations.
- Assist with ASC 842 - Accounting for Leases including but not limited to software implementation, and development of Corporate accounting policy, procedures, and controls to ensure compliance.
- Reconcile intercompany accounts.
- Perform analysis of changes in the individual balance sheets and income statement accounts on a monthly, quarterly, and/or annual basis to include fluctuation analyses.
- Prepare supporting schedules to facilitate the preparation of monthly financial reports, audit schedules, and collection of data and collaborate with external auditors to ensure timely and competent responses to audit requests.
- Assist with the preparation of the Annual Financial Report and supporting footnote schedules.
- Participate in the research of accounting treatment for transactions or new contracts and new accounting pronouncements and documentation of conclusions for management review.
- Identify and implement operational improvements and research technical issues relating to US GAAP.
- Create financial statements for upper management.
- Ensure all accounting practices follow established accounting principles.
- Serve as the liaison with outside tax professionals.
- Implement and maintain financial internal controls and policies.
- Identify solutions to discrepancies in financial records.
- Work collaboratively and influentially on projects with cross-functional business partners and across many business groups to achieve desired business outcomes.
- Provide ad-hoc financial reports and metrics.
- Maintain strict levels of confidentiality.
- Teach, train, and explain accounting concepts to others.
- Model the high level of customer service expected of all the Company associates including responding to voice mails and emails within organizationally defined timeframes, completing projects as committed, responding to others' feedback appropriately, and making optimal use of limited resources by aiding other functional teams when appropriate.
Qualifications
- BA/BS degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited 4-year college or equivalent proven experience is required; a mix of public accounting and private industry is preferred.
- At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in Accounting or Finance is required.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, prioritization, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task and prioritize projects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- High proficiency with MS Office including intermediate knowledge of Excel (VLOOKUP's) and building spreadsheets.

Additional qualifications
- Expert knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
- Experience with ERP or other accounting applications, especially SAP or R365.
- Proficient relationship-building skills, including the capacity to predict and manage behavior, build and foster cross-functional partnerships within and outside the organization.
- Proficient project planning skills, including the ability to organize, prioritize, and control job responsibilities to meet deadlines in an environment with overlapping and potentially conflicting priorities.
- Ability to gather/scrutinize data to identify issues, opportunities, patterns, and sustainable business solutions.
- Ability to assertively solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Employees in this position may interact with a supervisor daily or several times a week to receive guidance and feedback. Some non-routine activities may require a supervisor's advance approval, but routine decisions within the general scope of the role may be made independently. Please note: King's Hawaiian operates in a hybrid work model where we are in the office Monday through Wednesday and work from home on Thursday and Friday.
The salary range for this role is $33.65/hour to $52.88/hour with an annual bonus.
