Staff Accountant (Accounts Receivable)

We are seeking a Staff Accountant to own the revenue and order-to-cash functions, and facilitate month-end close. This role requires strong analytical and communication skills, as well as a solid technical accounting knowledge to ensure transactions are recorded in accordance with GAAP. The Staff Accountant  plays a crucial role in producing financial statements for internal and external stakeholders and creating robust and scalable billing and collections processes. We are looking for a candidate who is highly organized, self-motivated, and a problem solver. They should be collaborative and capable of independently executing their responsibilities. 

This role reports to the Sr. Manager, Finance & Accounting and is based in our Emeryville, CA headquarters on a hybrid schedule (in office 2-3 days per week). 

Responsibilities

• Serve as primary point of contact for Accounts Receivable 

• Ensure accuracy and timeliness of customer billing and cash application processes
• Execute on collections strategies for different segments within Sound Agriculture’s accounts receivable portfolio 
• Administer billing operations technologies
• Prepare and present weekly and monthly aging and collections reports. Monitor and report on Sound Agriculture’s accounts receivable KPIs
• Partner with Sound Agriculture’s customer service team to analyze trends, root causes, and opportunities for improvement within the order-to-cash process
• Mitigate trade credit risk by evaluating customer credit worthiness and recommend appropriate credit limits
• Manage third party collections agency and collections process
• Monitor sales for state and local sales tax compliance. Work with third party sales tax software (Avalara) to ensure prompt filing of monthly, quarterly, and yearly sales tax returns
• Evaluate customer agreements and create ASC 606 revenue recognition schedules
• Research accounting guidances and prepare technical memos regarding Sound Agriculture’s revenue transactions
• Prepare journal entries and balance sheet account reconciliations as part of the monthly close
• Partner with other job functions to gather requested documentation for the annual financial statement audit

Targeted Skills & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance with specific coursework on accounting rules and regulations
• Extensive knowledge of billing and collections best practices 
• Expert spreadsheet knowledge required
• Proficiency with accounting software systems, such as QuickBooks Online 
• Experience reporting and extracting data from SalesForce strongly preferred
• Knowledge of sales tax software, such as Avalara or Taxjar, is a plus
