Position Description

Basic Function:

Prepares and analyzes cash transactions to support financial processes for Southern Company Gas and subsidiaries.

Responsibilities:

Functional Expertise:

• Classifies and records cash totals to the Oracle AR System; prepare, balance and analyze the daily detail cash transaction types and totals to the bank statement.

• Generates standard and non-standard reports.

• Records miscellaneous cash accounting transactions via journal entries.

• Performs general ledger account reconciliations; researches outstanding items/issues

• Independently and creatively solves problems.

• Works with customers (internal and external) to conduct independent investigation to resolve problems; answers questions.

Driving Results:

• Performs basic analysis of accounting, financial reports and documents; makes adjustments as necessary.

• Calculates and reviews financial information relating to cash accounting and provides expert advice to management

Qualifications:

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

• BA/BS Degree in Business, Accounting or Finance (or comparable degree)

• or any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training which enable applicant to meet entry requirements.

Related Work Experience:

Required:

• 2-4 years experience performing accounting activities

• Experience working with management on an individual and team basis

Preferred:

• Utility, natural gas or other energy industry experience

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

• Basic working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

• Strong Analytical skills

• Time management and planning

• Oracle Financials - basic proficiency

• MS Word - intermediate proficiency

• MS Excel - intermediate proficiency

Preferred:

• Customer Information System (CCB) - intermediate proficiency

• Customer service skills

Certifications/Licenses:

None required

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

• Keyboarding = 20-90%

• Viewing reports and information on-line = 50%

• Travel = Minimal
