Staff Accountant (Temporary)

GILLIG LLC is the largest and most dependable manufacturer of Heavy Duty Transit Buses in North America. Our customers are in all 50 states, and include cities, counties, transit districts, universities and major private fleet operators. We are headquartered in Livermore, CA.

The Staff Accountant position owns the preparation and filing of all indirect tax and property tax returns as well as other business licenses while serving as a resource of such to internal business partners.  Additional responsibilities for general accounting journal entries, account reconciliations, and analyses are equally important in this role. You must have a strong attention to detail and carry out relevant administrative duties as needed; promote good morale, strong productivity and proficiency within the Finance Department.

This position reports directly to the Tax Manager.

• Own all aspects of all sales tax, excise tax, property tax, gross receipts and other business license returns including government reports to ensure the accurate and timely preparation and filing
• Serve as liaison for external government agency inquiries
• Continually monitor accounting and sales tax/license issues to ensure that GILLIG’s accounting policies and procedures conform to the most current Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
• Handle full-cycle accounting to include preparation of Journal Entries to ensure compliance with GAAP, the Company’s accounting policies, and internal controls
• Perform month-end and year-end accounting close adhering to the close schedule. This includes, but is not limited to, journal entries with proper documentation, year-end accruals, and reconciliations with proper documentation and approval; and statement preparation and analysis.
• Reconcile all non-cost accounting general ledger accounts including the follow-up and resolution of reconciling items
• Review and maintain all Fixed Asset files and reconciliations including monitoring capital asset acquisition projects in progress
• Own all aspects of inter-company activities and ensure that all the respective accounts are current and reconciled
• Assist Tax Manager and Assistant Controller in ensuring good internal controls throughout GILLIG
• Undertake other special projects at the direction of the Assistant Controller and or the CFO

• BS/BA degree with a concentration in Accounting/Finance
• 2 years of related Accounting experience required
• Minimum of 2 years' experience in Multi-State Sales Tax Preparation, Account Reconciliation, and Journal Entries preferred
• Build partnerships while collaborating with team members
• Initiate action plans and follow through to make deadlines
• Proven ability to e create and present “Formal Presentations” to leaders
• Proficient in Microsoft Office or Word/Excel
• Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
• Ability to read and analyze financial reports
• Strong understanding of sales and use tax regulations
• Attention to detail
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
