Position Summary
MTT (Manufacturing Technology & Transfer) works as an integral part of our Consumables Development and Manufacturing teams and is tasked with developing and deploying consumables manufacturing processes within our production environments.
The Staff, Automation Systems Engineer serves an important role in the MTT to support the development of tools/automated equipment and processes from the prototype phase to full scale production. The role will collaborate with consumable Development teams, Reagent & Substrate Production, Assembly Manufacturing, EHS, Facilities, Supply chain and Quality assurance to develop Automated Manufacturing processes to support the launch of new products or provide solutions to upgrade existing manufacturing infrastructure. The position will require a creative problem solver to evaluate and deploy new automation technology through proof-of-concept testing, feasibility evaluation, characterization, and validation of solutions in an FDA regulated GMP environment.
Responsibilities
- Identify and scope out detailed requirements for automation equipment, evaluate both off-the-shelf and custom solutions with vendors to solve for complex manufacturing challenges
- Lead/ Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to define, transfer and scale-up manufacturing, define system specifications, test plans and support validation activities
- Functions as a central resource with design, development, test, quality, and manufacturing cross-functional teams as the equipment moves through their lifecycle
- Project management, creation and maintenance of detailed project plans and schedules for team members, provide status reports and make presentations on progress
- Collaborate with vendors and engineering contractors to deliver solutions on time and within budget
- Ensure systems and equipment follow company quality system and regulatory requirements
- Interface with vendors and serve as the Lead Engineer during commissioning (FAT, SAT) and validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) activities of new automation systems
- Interface with Process development team during tool and process characterization efforts to support effective and efficient delivery of system into manufacturing
- Analyze test results, issue reports, and make technical recommendations to improve product and process quality
- Author procedures and instructions for new manufacturing equipment and train production operators to manufacture product in a GMP environment
- Utilize expertise in 6-sigma, DFSS, 8D, DMAIC to solve issues that arise during equipment bring up and process development phases of new product introductions
- Mentor and guide junior engineers with daily process sustaining and continuous improvements.

Requirements
- Possess strong engineering fundamentals with relevant experience in automation system design, development, and delivery
- Working experience in highly collaborative cross-functional and matrixed organizations
- Prior experience in verification and troubleshooting of equipment wiring, pneumatics, and automation components
- Exposure to automation component selection and troubleshooting
- Exposure to servo-driven systems, robotics, controllers, and vision systems
- Experience with Electrical cabinet layouts using SolidWorks and AutoCAD
- Basic knowledge and understanding of communications networking
- Prior experience with PLC and HMI software development and troubleshooting
- Proficiency using PLC software tools such as RStudio 5000, RSLogix, etc.
- Proficiency using HMI software tools such as FactoryTalk View
- Excellent technical writing, presentation, and oral communication skills
- Ability to multi-task, stay organized, and incorporate feedback in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent project management skills - ability to establish tools and ways of working to ensure accurate and timely follow-up and on-time deliverables with internal and external stakeholders
Education and Experience:
- B.S./M.S. in Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, Chemical Engineering, with at least 8-12 years of relevant experience in automation system design, development, sustaining

The estimated base salary range for the Staff Automation Engineer role based in the United States of America is: $124,300 - $186,500. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable salary range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
