Staff Backend Engineer - Payments Platform

The Payments Platform team’s mission is to empower developers and communities to create and monetize premium experiences on Reddit. We make working with money easy and safe so that Reddit, developers and contributors can make money doing what they do best.

Our team is a new part of Reddit X, our strategic “bets” org responsible for building experimental, brand-new products on Reddit. We’ve been tasked with building a dedicated, world-class, payments platform that will not only handle purchases and payouts for our existing products - like Reddit Gold, Collectible Avatars, and Premium - but also pave the way for future yet-to-come products.

Our platform will also serve as the payments infrastructure for our exciting new Developer Platform. Their goal is to empower third-party developers to build custom apps and experiences directly into the Reddit app, and our goal is to help those developers make money building premium games, experiences, bots, tools, etc.

We are hiring a Staff Backend Engineer who can lead the design and development for this payments platform. You'll be a key driver of business and long-term technical strategy. You will partner with key stakeholders, solve for complex cross-functional requirements, and make technical tradeoffs with long-term business goals in mind.

Responsibilities:

• Architect, build, and maintain a generalized payment infrastructure at scale. Ensure the infrastructure can adapt to the evolving needs of diverse Reddit monetization products.
• Lead the long-term technical strategy, balancing complex, ambiguous requirements against pressing priorities.
• Champion technical excellence ensuring system reliability, scalability, security, and compliance.
• Skillfully negotiate and manage requirements, ensuring all stakeholders are aligned and that solutions meet the diverse needs of the business.
• Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance team environment.

Qualifications:

• 7+ years backend development experience with multiple parts of the backend stack, from databases to networking to efficient computing. We develop with Go, Python, Postgres, Redis, Thrift, GraphQL and deploy to Docker/k8s on AWS.
• Ability to design and build complex distributed systems operating under high load.
• Technical leadership experience on payment processing systems. Understanding of global payment systems, including legal, security, and compliance requirements.
• Experience in developing backend infrastructure projects serving multiple teams.

• Excellent communication skills. You must be able to collaborate effectively with teams in a fully-remote environment, and negotiate complex requirements with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience mentoring engineers, owning team processes, and leading cross-functional projects is preferred.
