Job Description

Team: Analyst

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Staff Data Scientist - Risk in Canada.

This role offers a high-impact opportunity to help design and shape the next generation of risk, fraud, and abuse detection systems within a fast-growing financial technology environment. You will work at the intersection of data science, product, and engineering to define how risk is measured, understood, and mitigated across crypto and fiat products. Operating within a newly formed and highly autonomous Risk team, you will help build foundational decisioning frameworks, analytics systems, and operational tooling from the ground up. The position requires both deep analytical expertise and strong product judgment to balance fraud prevention, customer experience, and regulatory expectations. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional partners including engineering, compliance, security, and operations to translate complex risk signals into actionable insights. This is an ideal role for a senior data science leader who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys building systems rather than only analyzing them, and is excited about shaping financial trust and safety at scale.

Accountabilities

  • Define and evolve the measurement framework for core risk metrics including fraud loss, scam exposure, false positives, customer friction, and operational efficiency.
  • Partner with engineering and product teams to design the architecture of risk systems, decisioning frameworks, and internal tooling.
  • Analyze fraud, scam, and abuse patterns across crypto and fiat transactions to identify emerging threats and behavioral trends.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards, reporting systems, and analytical frameworks to monitor risk controls and operational performance.
  • Design and improve data instrumentation, decisioning systems, and workflows that support fraud prevention and risk operations.
  • Evaluate risk controls and policies using statistical analysis, experimentation, and causal inference methodologies.
  • Apply machine learning techniques selectively where they meaningfully improve detection, decision quality, or operational efficiency.
  • Conduct deep-dive investigations into incidents, anomalies, and evolving fraud patterns.
  • Communicate insights, risks, and recommendations clearly to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Establish analytical standards, best practices, and decision-making frameworks within the Risk organization.
  • Support the transformation of raw data into actionable risk intelligence that drives product and operational decisions.
  • Requirements

    • 8+ years of experience in data science, decision science, analytics, or similar quantitative roles.
    • Strong background in fraud, trust and safety, AML, risk analytics, or compliance-focused data work.
    • Advanced proficiency in SQL and Python for data analysis and modeling.
    • Experience applying statistical methods, experiment design, regression, classification, and causal inference techniques.
    • Strong understanding of product thinking and ability to connect data insights to business and customer outcomes.
    • Experience working with modern data stack tools such as Snowflake, dbt, or equivalent cloud data platforms.
    • Proven ability to work in ambiguous, fast-paced environments with high ownership expectations.
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify complex analytical findings for non-technical audiences.
    • Experience partnering cross-functionally with engineering, product, compliance, and operations teams.
    • Strong judgment in selecting appropriate analytical methods based on business context and constraints.
    • Interest or familiarity with fintech, crypto, payments, or regulated financial environments.
    • Ability to influence decision-making through structured thinking and data-driven storytelling.
    • Benefits

      • Competitive compensation with a base salary range of CAD $200,000–$250,000, plus equity participation.
      • Comprehensive health and dental insurance, including wellness spending accounts.
      • Fully remote-friendly work environment across Canada with optional office access.
      • Stock options as part of total compensation, supporting long-term ownership.
      • Annual learning and development budget to support continuous professional growth.
      • Generous paid time off including 20 vacation days and additional bonus incentives.
      • Parental leave top-up providing up to 18 weeks at 100% salary.
      • Quarterly team and company-wide offsites to foster collaboration and connection.
      • Opportunity to shape foundational risk systems in a high-growth fintech environment.
      • Strong culture of ownership, learning, and cross-functional collaboration.
