Job Description:

Pratt & Whitney's Materials & Processes Engineering organization is seeking a Design Metallurgist. The Design Metallurgy Group advises Design, Structures, and Project Engineering on the selection and application of all materials, and chemical or metallurgical processes to meet design strength considerations, environmental compatibility, and cost goals for engines, rigs, and advanced projects. Design Metallurgists approve P&W product definition documents, ensure that design intent is being achieved, and that the documents include technically correct materials and processes requirements. The Design Metallurgist represents MPE as a reviewer during design reviews and supports manufacturing operations, suppliers, and quality non-conformance evaluation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Creative, analytical, self-starter, energetic, and work in a team environment at all levels of organization
  • The approval of designs and repairs for choice of proper materials and processing methods
  • Provide input to design, manufacturing, and analytical groups concerning materials properties and processes and to materials and process specialists concerning design intent
  • Serve as the materials chief during Design Reviews.
  • Analyze material property data to establish minimum levels for design purposes and establishes appropriate specifications for material procurement.
  • Assist suppliers and customers with materials, manufacturing, and repair related issues.

Basic Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of experience in Materials Engineering / Metallurgy with a solid understanding of metallurgy fundamentals
  • OR 5+ years of experience with an Advanced Degree in a related field
  • US Citizenship required due to government contracts
  • < 10% Travel

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Broad knowledge of materials and processes used in gas turbine engines
  • An understanding of the design and manufacture of gas turbine components
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required to interface with people of diverse engineering disciplines
  • Excellent communication skills, including technical writing
  • Must be able to work in a self-directed team environment.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and specifications.
  • MS Office, especially Excel, with statistical data analysis software familiarity a plus.
  • An understanding of materials testing and characterization techniques.
