Job Summary:

Smith + Nephew is looking for a Digitization Engineer to join our Operational Technology team. This position is responsible for identifying, implementing, and scaling digitization and automation programs across the manufacturing network, with a focus on implementing Digital Factory initiatives, such as machine connectivity, shop floor automation, data aggregation and analysis, and simulation.

The Digitization Engineer works with multi-functional teams and external contractors in the successful development of various manufacturing systems and architectures to support business goals and objectives according to strategic plans. This position is responsible for ensuring that time-line landmark commitments are achieved while meeting all Safety, Quality, and Cost requirements and for achieving performance targets for efficiency savings and value.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Implement multiple digitization projects at Smith and Nephew locations worldwide, principally in Memphis Tennessee. Ensure manufacturing requirements, cost, quality, and timing expectations are met. Deliver annual savings and efficiency improvement targets.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement technologies and tools for automated data gathering and analysis including Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) and data visualization technologies.
  • Support manufacturing processes, procedures and production layouts for assemblies, equipment installation, processing, machining and material handling.
  • Design and support data architectures and IT implementations within the factory environment and in communication with cloud services.
  • Design and support sequence of operations and specify procedures for the development of applications that affect product performance.
  • Adapt and assist with equipment design to Digital Factory requirements.
  • Develop and support implementation of manufacturing processes that are applicable to monitoring and statistical process control.
  • Provide Design For Automation recommendations to Development or Manufacturing Engineering regarding design concepts and specification requirements to best leverage manufacturing 4.0 technologies.
  • Ensure projects, processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations.
  • Provide technical solutions and improvements to manufacturing processes and ensure cost and quality.
  • Drive through challenges to deliver on commitments. Communicate clearly in verbal, written, and graphical formats. Demonstrate the ability to multi-task and manage programs.
  • In this role it is essential to be able to establish and drive collaborations among diverse departments and interested functions, and to drive towards consensus that balances customer needs with capabilities and schedules.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering and at least 10 years professional work experience in automation, IT, or controls in a manufacturing environment OR eight years' experience with at least five years specific to Manufacturing 4.0 technology development and implementation.
  • Experience with specifying / implementing / coding / configuring sensors and associated software tools for data gathering, analytics, or machine/robot control in a manufacturing environment (Industrial Internet of Things / IIOT).
  • Proven experience in connecting systems to industrial machinery - mechanical, electrical, data/controls - for optimizing & improving processes (manufacturing 4.0 / IIOT technologies) OR in aggregating, manipulating, and analyzing shop floor data to drive efficiencies.
  • Knowledge and interest in basic IT concepts (e.g., networking, security) sufficient to troubleshoot designs and installations and contribute to strategic design discussions
  • Able to communicate effectively in English
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Knowledgeable in the understanding and development of software validation plan and reports
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing project plans encompassing diverse roles / organizations.
  • Understanding of key manufacturing metrics and KPI's

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in IT installation / service /support
  • Experience implementing/coordinating Tulip Interfaces, PTC KepServer and/or other digital factory software/IIOT packages
  • Experience in development of product requirements into machine User Requirements Specifications (URS) that mitigate patient risk through PFMEA traceable URS risk mitigations
  • Experience with data architectures, machine learning, statistics
  • Experience in basic electronics' assembly / machine diagnostics
  • Experience Deploying/Coordinating Azure or AWS IoT infrastructure
  • Solid understanding of Programmable Logic Control (PLC) configuration
  • Working knowledge of key Medical standards such as FDA 21 CFR Part 11, FDA CFR Part 820, ISO 14971, ISO 13485, ISO 9001, CMDCAS/CMDR. Understand medical device requirements for software validation, Installation Qualification (IQ), Operation Qualification (OQ) and Process Qualification (PQ) as it relates to production equipment validation.
  • Experience in either direct role in the medical device/biopharma sector or consulting work on a medical device/biopharma project

Job Requirements:

  • Able to view items through microscope, Extended periods of time doing computer-based work
  • Position will require off-hours support / remote meetings with international sites, teams, or vendors in the US and Europe, and Asia

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly required to be independently mobile.
  • Interact with a computer and communicate with peers and co-workers.
  • Able to lift 25 pounds.

Travel Requirements:

  • 10%
