Our Merchant platform is a distributed near real time low latency system that is always available and highly resilient, processing transactions from around the world 24x7, 365 days a year.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, driven, and forward-thinking Staff Engineer to join our mission. As a Staff Engineer in GMST, you will help lead the organization to the next generation interactive experience across channels.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as forward thinking leader on the GMST leadership team, participating in strategic discussions, inspiring change, and helping to drive vital enhancements.
  • Drive the technology design, vision, engineering, development, and rollout for multiple products, and software utilities across the Merchant platform, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of American Express and its merchants.
  • Hands-on collaboration to define, develop, test, and validate technical solutions to help drive customer-first product roadmap enabling business outcomes.
  • Implement innovative technologies and demonstrate courage to fail. Ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and able to exploit them to their optimal potential.
  • Be a contributor to the Technology community by actively participating in team and company-wide architecture and engineering discussions and forums.

  • 12+ years of hands-on Engineering experience in a complex environment and/or comparable experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Computer Science Engineering, or related field required; Masters is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with Reactive and Functional programming, ELK, Java, Vert.X, APIs, Spark, Scala, Kafka, Gridgain, Apache ignite, Cassandra, Full Stack, Python, PostgreSQL, OneData, DB/Caches (Elastic/Redis), DB2 and eCP infrastructure, Jenkins and In Memory Computing.
  • High degree of technical expertise related to the core components of the tech stack.
  • Expertise in building highly available, fault-tolerant, scalable solutions that perform at a global enterprise scale.
  • Ability to understand the overall picture of a product roadmap (1-3 years) and collaborate to identify architecture roadmap.
  • Courage to challenge the status quo and encourage different points of views to mitigate biased decisions
  • Ability to lead multiple priorities and rapidly guide the organization through change moments.
  • Extraordinary influential, collaboration and relationship building skills and working with Architects, Principal Architects, Engineering Directors, and Engineers to define, test and validate solution requirements and technical implementation approaches.
  • Demonstrated experience coaching, mentoring, and developing technical professionals.
  • Knowledge of Amex Acquiring and Merchant Payments platforms and business processes is a plus.
