Seeking an experienced staff level Firmware Development Engineer to play a leading role in developing high quality instrument control firmware for BD's line of flow cytometers. As a leading member of the firmware development team, you will be responsible for architecting, developing, debugging, and documenting robust and reliable firmware to satisfy the product requirements. About the role:

As a key and experienced member of the Firmware Engineering Team, you will be responsible for the development of embedded software for medical devices and instrumentation. You will be providing technical leadership and having a significant impact on BD's products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate closely and cross-functionally with the project team to develop, implement, and document robust and reliable firmware solutions to meet product requirements, development timelines and written specifications.
  • Collaborate with the Systems, Software, Firmware, and Hardware development teams during the Firmware requirements creation process to create firmware requirements that are unambiguous, complete, realizable, and verifiable and are properly linked to system level requirements.
  • Provides technical leadership and mentoring across the organization.
  • Be a subject matter expert and resource regarding FW solutions, toolchains, methodologies, architectures, etc.
  • Perform development work independently with minimal supervision required.
  • Ensure quality of work product by following good coding standards and best practices.
  • Generate documentation to support regulatory filings and internal reports and specifications.
  • Supports the work in formal Verification and Validation activities.
  • Provide R&D input on CAPA reports and post product release support to BD Manufacturing worldwide.
  • Follow design, quality, and safety guidelines based on GMP, FDA, and ISO guidelines and related BD Quality and Safety Standards and Practices
  • Understand business goals and link them to design directions and product architecture and promote short-term solutions that support long-term product vision and strategies.

About You:

You are a talented and experienced senior-level firmware engineer with significant experience developing for embedded systems. You thrive in a team environment and are excited to work in the medical device industry because you realize that your work will positively impact patients' qualities of life. You are able to handle multiple, on-going projects and are comfortable dealing with different and changing prioritizations. You have a strong track record of demonstrated success in designing and developing robust and reliable firmware which meets requirements. You know how to plan your time, and you deliver to the commitments you make.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Science, or Math or equivalent experience. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in developing firmware/software for embedded systems.
  • Significant experience with C++ and C for embedded systems.
  • Experience in various peripheral buses and network protocols, UART, SPI, I2C, I2S, USB, HTTPs and TCP/IP. Low-level knowledge of communication protocols and device drivers is a plus.
  • Development experience with Embedded Linux for SoC. Experience with Windows IOT is a plus.
  • Experience programming microcontrollers (ARM, ColdFile, TI, x86, STM, etc.)
  • Excellent bring-up, debugging, and problem-solving skills. Bare hardware boot processes and firmware. Hands on experience troubleshooting firmware/hardware interfaces using test equipment such as logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and debuggers.
  • Familiarity and experience with Issue/Task/Bug tracking systems such as Azure DevOps or Jira.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in cross-functional and cross-geographical multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must be able to manage time effectively and efficiently and able to context-switch as necessary to deal with new issues.
  • Able to bring clarity to ambiguous situations.

Desirable:

  • Experience with working in a regulated industry strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with C# and experience with Python is a plus.
  • Experience with RTOS and multi-threaded development like VxWorks or Micrum uC/OS-II.
  • Custom Windows Driver Development with PCIe experience, kernel mode driver development and knowledge using user mode driver development.
  • Experience with memory management, interrupt controller and bootloader strongly desired.
  • Device driver development of Timer, ADC, RTC, DMA module highly preferred.
  • Experience with IAR or uVision IDE.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps.
