Job Description

IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

We are looking for a staff level optical mechanical engineer. As a staff level optical mechanical engineer, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.

In this role, you will lead the design and assembly of laser based optical systems and mounting structures for trapped ion quantum computer systems. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to develop cutting-edge optical systems that utilize components for ultra-high precision beam shaping and steering optics. Your expertise will be crucial in designing and integrating complex lenses, waveplates, acousto-optics modulators, and other optical components into these systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of optical launch plates and mounting structures for trapped ion quantum computer systems, ensuring they meet the demanding requirements for ultra-high precision beam shaping and steering optics
  • Collaborate with optical engineers, mechanical designers, physicists, and other stakeholders to define design specifications and performance objectives for the optical systems
  • Conduct and oversee the detailed optical and mechanical analyses to optimize the performance and reliability of the optical components and systems
  • Manage the prototyping, fabrication, assembly, and testing of optical modules, ensuring they meet the desired specifications and performance targets
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence within the optical mechanical engineering team
  • Work closely with suppliers, machine shops and vendors to select and source appropriate mechanical and optical components
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues related to optical performance or functionality
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical guidance and recommendations
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time, if not located onsite to perform hands-on assembly responsibilities

You’d be a good fit with:

  • 10+ years of industry experience in optics-based hardware and architecture design
  • Fluency in GD&T and CAD – SolidWorks preferred
  • Experience using Finite Element Analysis tools, such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, Simulation, COMSOL, or similar
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or another relevant engineering degree
  • Knowledge of precision optical/mechanical alignment tools and techniques
  • Strong written communication and organization skills to effectively convey complex ideas and coordinate multiple tasks in a dynamic work environment

You’d be a great fit with:

  • M.S. or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or another relevant engineering degree
  • Extensive experience in the design and assembly of optical systems, preferably in the field of quantum computing or a related area
  • Industry experience developing opto-mechanical products, including performing finite element analysis for thermal, shock and vibration to validate the structural integrity of the unit under test
  • Experience developing specifications for optical/optomechanical/optoelectronic assemblies
  • Working knowledge of different materials, fabrication processes and their capabilities/limitations for making mechanical and optical components
  • Knowledge of how to take a systematic approach to problem-solving, with the capacity to identify root causes, propose innovative solutions, and optimize designs for optimal performance
  • Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to handle complex optical requirements to overcome unique engineering obstacles
  • Experience/success in interacting with suppliers directly, collaboration with supply chain sourcing, fostering partnerships for critical development and risk reduction
  • Ability to articulate complex concepts in a clear and concise manner, actively listen to feedback, and work cooperatively towards shared project goals for seamless integration of optical components and successful project outcomes
