Summary/Purpose of Position

The Staff Engineer will be responsible for technical leadership in product innovation, design, research and development to support the commercialization of new products and line extensions.

This position is based in Warwick RI. Relocation assistance is available.

Essential Duties and Position Responsibilities:
  • Works under general direction to guide design and development of sophisticated medical devices that are needed to meet key business objectives relating to the existing and new medical device products.
  • Drives creative, logic and risk-based approaches through critical thinking to resolve technical and/or multi-functional challenges and tradeoffs under business constraints.
  • Contributes to development and implementation of R&D strategies through evaluation of customer needs, new business opportunities, and emerging or adjacent technologies.
  • Independently determines and develops technical solutions to complex problems using sound engineering principles and design of experiments (DOE) while utilizing experimental, computational and/or analytical methods.
  • Leads design and fabrication of functional prototypes and robust test methods.
  • Plan and performs hands-on benchtop studies, design verification, troubleshooting and/or root-cause-analysis to evaluate product performance & improvements.
  • Supports material, design and/or process changes to existing products by following design control process and generating well-documented research and analyses records.
  • Demonstrate strong drive for results and clear accountability for successful and timely completion of designated tasks and projects.
  • Contribute to the development of new product development capabilities, methodologies, and expertise by staying aware to trends in the computational and visualization technology fields and actively seek training to further improve skills.
  • Ensures compliance with BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through appropriate communication, training, and education of sound quality assurance principles.


Education and Experience:
  • BS with minimum of 6 years, MS with 4 or PhD with 2 years of related medical device experience. Advanced degree is highly desirable.
  • Product development experience in medical device industry
  • Degree in Mechanical, Biomedical or closely related engineering fields.


Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills Required:
  • Strength in scientific and engineering fundamentals based on first principles understanding including critical thinking and detailed problem-solving skills as well as business acumen and learning agility are essential requirements to be successful in this position.
  • Proven experience in technology or innovative product development preferably in the medical device or adjacent industry with successful track record of commercializing.
  • Project management experience required.
  • Proficiency in development and fabrication of functional biomedical and prototypes.
  • Experience in phase-gate product development and new concept/solution business proposals
  • Proficiency with statistical methods including DoE and data analysis using software such as Minitab
  • Experience in test method development (fixture design and hands-on testing) including Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA)
  • Familiarity with any of FEA and/or CFD modeling software is a plus.
  • Front end innovation experience is a plus.
  • Ability to communicate concepts, ideas and knowledge clearly and effectively.
