ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Staff Firmware Engineer position is a hands-on role requiring a thorough study and understanding of existing designs in order to apply innovative engineering principles towards architecture design and firmware optimization. The Staff Firmware Engineer works with new product development teams to support high-value engineering activities. The Staff Firmware Engineer should be highly cross functional, and capable of leading the technical parts of a firmware program, including architecture design, workstream planning, managing members of the team, and working with external stakeholders. The Staff Firmware Engineer is flexible and can respond quickly, energetically, and enthusiastically to changes. The Staff Firmware Engineer will be expected to fulfill a wide breadth of roles on the engineering team, including technical lead, bug fixing, feature implementation, and to lead root-cause analysis efforts, when needed. The Staff Firmware Engineer will be a highly motivated and talented individual with technical leadership experience, who will be responsible for leading, designing, and optimizing high-quality embedded code that will bring these hardware products to the next level.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead a team of firmware engineers, and staging work appropriately for high-level deliverables
  • Maintain contact with the cross functional partners, escalate firmware concerns, and account for any external dependencies, where appropriate
  • Act as a mentor and voice of experience to the broader team
  • Cross-functional organization, communication, and management
  • Create meetings and document action items and progress
  • Travel to support manufacturing builds, and coordinating the firmware teams’ activities
  • Report and present to senior management on project status and schedules
  • Create, modify, and update code for new and existing products, delegate to functional team, where appropriate
  • Drive firmware solutions for improvements and high-level plan for factory test sequence
  • Own and manage troubleshooting and debugging workstreams and expedite completion

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant Firmware optimization experience in one or more of the following areas: product design, new product release, test engineering, manufacturing support
  • Previous experience with medical devices or other regulated products is desirable
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated, team player, with a strong desire to learn new skills and grow
  • Experience with embedded microcontrollers and low power devices
  • Demonstrable firmware architecture design experience and strong technical troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to multi-task or focus on detailed problems, and tenacity to drive issues until resolved
  • Software Experience - C is a must, as is experience with either Python or demonstrable experience with a number of other scripting and/or high-level programming languages
  • Real-time Operating System (RTOS)
  • Understanding of serial communication protocols I2C, SPI, UART
  • Working with EE to bring up a PCB
  • Experience with sensors or other ICs communicating over SPI and/or I2C (required)
  • BLE preferred
  • This is a Hybrid role onsite 2 days a week

EDUCATION:

  • EE, Computer Engineering, or CS degree or experience in lieu of degree

SALARY RANGES:
Salary varies by role, level and location, and is dependent on the cost of labor in a given
geographic region among other factors. These ranges may be modified at any time.
SALARY RANGE:
$166,000—$249,000 USD
