Staff Industrial Designer

Vicarious Surgical is hiring a Staff Industrial Designer on our Product Design Team based in Waltham. In this role, you will be responsible for helping to define the industrial design of our system’s multiple pieces of capital equipment and working with your human factors engineering, UI/UX design, and clinical development engineering colleagues to design a best-in-class user experience for surgeons and operating room staff.

Responsibilities:

• Develop an understanding and empathy for our users on how they value and interact with our digital products.
• Develop an understanding of the clinical workflow to ensure design solutions meet clinical needs.
• Contribute to all phases of the design process including: brainstorming to tap into the creativity of the design team, providing technical perspective during early concept generation, creating CAD databases for functional prototypes and appearance models, and creating documentation to ensure design intent is maintained in the downstream engineering and manufacturing phases of development
• Apply basic shop practices to create functional models in order to assess concept feasibility
• Engage and manage outside vendors for prototyping, gathering manufacturability feedback and cost and lead-time estimates
• Assemble prototypes, conduct tests, and create reports and other documentation tailored to project/client needs
• Integrate user feedback, user research, and product metrics into all designs
• Contribute to our ID vision and strategy, build strong relationships to generate buy-in and operationalize strategy across larger teams and timelines.
• Provide technical consultation to multi-disciplinary design teams with respect to fundamental engineering principles, manufacturing feasibility, and technical risks

About You

• BS/MS degree in Industrial Design or Mechanical Engineering
• 8+ years of relevant design experience; medical device experience is a strong plus
• Experience representing work to a broader product team and other leaders, clearly and succinctly articulating the goals and concepts
• Have an excellent online portfolio or can demonstrate experience with projects containing complex surfaces combined with appropriate mechanical features
• Ability to generate robust 3D databases, mechanical drawings, prototypes, and written reports. 3D CAD experience is a must. SolidWorks proficiency strongly preferred 
• Able to provide  deliverables under tight deadlines and with input from many senior-level stakeholders. You possess coolness under pressure, problem solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to mediate and cope with rapid change
• Have the ability to build strong cross-functional relationships and drive design excellence with design, creative, technology and product partners
• Working knowledge of a wide variety of manufacturing processes, including injection molding, rapid prototyping, sheet metal fabrication, casting, and machining
