Job Description Summary:

The PayPal Business App engineering team is focused on building quality mobile products for our customers who rely on PayPal for running their business. Our mission is to help them understand, manage, and grow their business through features such as invoicing, dispute resolution, shipping management, sales insights, and financial loans – all from their mobile devices while on the go.
We are seeking passionate engineers to create new native mobile experiences for millions of active merchant users globally. PayPal offers many tools for merchants of all different sizes on the web, but currently many merchants are underserved by our mobile app offerings. The merchant apps team's goal is to change that with new, merchant focused mobile apps. We are in a hyper growth phase and are like a start up within a big company. Now is a great opportunity to be part of the core team that is developing this new product and features to help our merchants. We work together on close knit, small teams to develop our apps. We are passionate about respecting code quality and following our defined best practices while always searching for new, better ways to get things done. We value our ego-free code reviews and have continuous integration set up to test our pull requests, deliver nightly builds and run nightly regressions of our automated tests. We work closely and quickly with our design and product team to build, user-test and iterate new features with a customer driven focus. A Typical Day

  • Writing clean, simple, and tested code to support new product features.
  • Discussing implementation decisions, challenges, and tradeoffs with engineers, product managers, and designers.
  • Refactoring code to clean up inefficiencies we may have created along the way.
  • Representing the team in technical discussions with other PayPal engineering teams.
  • Participating actively in PR reviews and standup with teammates.

Success in this Role

  • First 30-45 days: You will onboard, learn the major components of the codebase, be able to fix minor bugs, and be proficient with our development, build, and release process. You are comfortable adding small changes to the codebase in Objective-C/Swift and JavaScript.
  • In 90 days: You will have a complete understanding of the product and codebase, including UI, internationalization, and app architecture. You will also be able to fix most bugs and will be capable of owning a feature. You will have made key relationships with lead engineers on other PayPal teams.
  • In 180 days: You will be able to own a complex feature end to end. This includes investigating and integrating with existing PayPal services and/or adding features. You are driving architecture discussions and implementation.
  • Forever: You will work diligently to advance our mobile app, delivering on time and with great quality. You will also help advance standards, SDKs, and best practices for all mobile teams at PayPal. You will continue to play a key role in improving our app architecture, refactoring, testing, CI, automation, instrumentation, and dev tooling.

Primary Job Responsibilities:
You will be primarily focused on building the UI layer of the new PayPal Merchant Android app, as well as building mobile SDKs that talk to PayPal APIs. We work on small teams and as a result wear many hats. You will be delivering new features, reacting to customer feedback & internal user testing, helping to ensure quality, working closely with our UX team to prototype new experiences and helping expand our app's reach however possible. Specific responsibilities include: 

  • Contribute to native Mobile application development by converting ideas, designs, and requirements into a robust and easy to use application.
  • Lead and deliver complex software development projects with quality and per schedule.
  • Provide frameworks, interfaces, and services that can be extended and reused.
  • Consult with business units on feasibility, technical requirements, and development effort for new initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Product and Design together for roadmap planning
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior team members.
  • Collaborate with the Core Application team to maintain overall application goals including application size and performance.
  • Identify areas of technical improvement and make business cases for improvements or new areas of opportunities.
  • Define and devise processes, tools, and methodologies to achieve excellence in software development, testing, and deployment.


Requirements:

• 5+ years of experience building iOS applications in an enterprise environment using Swift and Objective-C.

• Expertise in iOS UI design principles, patterns, and best practices.

• Thorough understanding of XCode

• Experience with animation, and implementing user interface designs

• Skilled at writing Unit and Automation tests

• Knowledge of design patterns such as MVVM and dependency injection

• Practical knowledge of iOS application architecture.

  • Experienced with API design and integration. Cognizant of HTTP/REST principles, networking, performance, latency, caching, authentication, security, and encryption.

• Knowledge of multi-threaded, asynchronous code

• Effective at working in cross-functional groups and getting results in a matrix organizations.

• Excellent verbal and writing skills; ability to produce clear, concise communications and documentation.

• BS/MS or equivalent degree in Computer Science

Preferred Qualifications (optional, but great to have):

  • Automation experience a plus.
  • Experience building non-trivial mobile applications for Android using Java programming language. Personal side projects are also interesting.
  • Javascript/Node experience.
  • 5 years of experience of relevant mobile work.
  • Experience at speaking at Conferences - internal/external
