Staff Software Engineer

The Opportunity

The Daily Beast is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic technical leader to support our award-winning journalism that serves over a million users every day.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about mentorship, and a true technical generalist. We are looking for a technologist who can lead system design and architecture conversations, but who can also flex into devops and is at least curious about native iOS and Android engineering. Detailed, empathetic written and verbal communication is also critical to supporting this small team.

The Staff Software Engineer will report to the SVP, Engineering and collaborate closely with our full engineering team as well as cross-functional partners in product design, product management, data and analytics. The Engineering team is New York City-based with a flexible work from home policy. This position can also be fully remote within the US.

Responsibilities:

• Create and socialize a perspective about overall system architecture
• Work with the product and business teams to translate business requirements into plans that align with the overall architecture
• Work with the engineering team to establish, and ensure compliance with, consistent technical standards and processes (code reuse, refactoring, testing, linting)
• Manage the direction of technical implementation across projects with an eye to consistency and maintainability
• Support the technical growth of team members through code review, pair programming, and architecture design documentation
• Lead investigation into, and drive alignment around, which tech is used where (open source packages, frameworks, test runners, data stores, logging, etc.)
• Work with our Director of Operations in supporting our infrastructure choices (Kubernetes, Concourse, Grafana, etc) and cybersecurity needs
• Work with leadership on establishing performance and availability standards

Desired Qualifications:

• 8+ years of experience as a technical generalist or full-stack engineer, preferably most recently in a tech lead role

• Fluency with Javascript-based technologies
• Comfort with SQL
• Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker and related infrastructure in a cloud-based environment
• Experience with cross-functional collaboration, and communicating technical concepts to non-technical peers
• Demonstrated passion for mentorship
• Experience with the process of integrating with third-party vendors
• Prior experience with or deep interest in the news media industry is a plus.

What else?

Currently and for the foreseeable future, this role is hybrid, with an expectation of 1-2 days per week in our NYC HQ. The pay range for this position is: $200,000-225,000 per year. The base salary range represents the anticipated low and high end of the salary range for this position. Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to work location, experience, and other factors. The range listed is just one component of The Daily Beast’s total compensation package. The Daily Beast is a globally recognized publication at IAC HQ in New York City.
